Event: Sustainable Aviation for Generations to Come [viewed]

This side event to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) will focus on the topic of “Sustainable aviation for generations to come.” The event will consist of an address by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Secretary General, followed by presentations from States and aviation stakeholders providing perspectives on sustainable alternative fuels for aviation and experiences with developing sustainable alternative fuels initiatives.

EU Finance Ministers Recommend Progress on Climate Finance [viewed]

4 October 2011: The Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the EU, which gathers EU finance ministers, has adopted conclusions on climate finance, in which the Council stresses the need to provide a transparent report on fast-start finance to ensure trust among UNFCCC parties, confirming that the EU will report in Durban on this issue.

ICAO Announces Phase-Out of Halon-Emitting Fire Extinguishers [viewed]

16 September 2011: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), at the working group meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, announced that it has amended standards related to aircraft operations and airworthiness to phase out halon-emitting fire extinguishers on board.

Event: ICAO Aviation and Sustainable Alternative Fuels Workshop [viewed]

This International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) workshop will provide a forum for information exchange on the state of worldwide activities on sustainable alternative fuels, especially biofuels, for aviation. In addition, the workshop aims to enhance dialogue among member States, financial institutions, fuel producers and operators over project financing for sustainable alternative aviation fuels. Further discussions will focus on, among others: harmonizing life cycle analysis methodologies; sustainability criteria; legal and regulatory frameworks to ensure availability of supply of sustainable alternative fuels for aviation; and the role of sustainable alternative fuels in member States' emissions reduction actions.
