Madrid High-level Meeting on Food Security for All Calls for Exploring Options for a Global Partnership for Agriculture and Food Security [viewed]

27 January 2009: The High-level Meeting on Food Security for All, held from 26-27 January 2009, in Madrid, Spain, issued a statement that calls for a consultative process on options for a Global Partnership for Agriculture Food Security and Nutrition. Convened by the Government of Spain and the UN, and attended by representatives of 126 countries as well as UN agencies, civil society, trade unions, academia, donor agencies and the private sector, the meeting reviewed progress in addressing the global food crisis since the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) High-level Conference on World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy, held in June 2008.

FAO and IWMI Launch Asia Pacific Water Forum's Knowledge Hub on Irrigation Service Reform [viewed]

22 January 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) launched the Asia Pacific Water Forum's Knowledge Hub for Irrigation Service Reform during a workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 19- 21 January 2009. The Knowledge Hub will work towards the modernization of irrigation in the region.

World Water Forum Prepcom Highlights Impacts of Climate Change on Water Scarcity [viewed]

Agriculture is by far the biggest water user

21 January 2009: The Third Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) meeting of the Ministerial Process of the Fifth World Water Forum, hosted by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and co-organized by the World Water Council, is being held at UN Food and Agriculture (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 21-23 January 2008. The meeting has gathered delegates from over 60 countries to continue negotiations on a global plan of action for adapting to global changes that affect the management of freshwater resources.

FAO Releases Forests and Climate Change Video [viewed]

Forests and climate change: A convenient truth

19 January 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UK Forestry Commission have produced a 17-minute video on “Forests and Climate Change: a Convenient Truth.” The video shows how forests can contribute to the mitigation of climate change, stressing the importance of reversing forest loss.

UNECE and FAO Launch Indicators Database for Sustainable Management of European Forests [viewed]

New interactive database on indicators of sustainable forest management in Europe

19 January: The Timber and Forestry programme of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have released a new web-based resource tool to enable researchers, policymakers, practitioners and the general public to access data on Europe's forests. The database includes information on the balance of carbon in forest ecosystems, forest health condition, status of forest biodiversity, aspects of production, protected forest areas, as well as social and economic aspects of the forestry sector.

WMO Helps Bangladesh Strengthen its Agrometeorological Services [viewed]

World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

17 December 2008: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is helping the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to upgrade and strengthen its network of agrometeorological observatories, as announced at the opening of a national seminar on agrometeorology taking place in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Other international organizations such as the World Bank, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme are also participating in the seminar to discuss the country's need for improved weather and climate data in support of agriculture.

17 December 2008: During the ministerial conference “Water for Agriculture and Energy in Africa: the Challenges of Climate Change,” held from 15-17 December 2008, in Sirte, Libya, ministers from 53 African countries adopted the Sirte Declaration, in which they pledge to promote water development throughout the continent to fully exploit Africa's agricultural and hydroenergy potential.
