14 December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the African, Caribbean and Pacific group of States (ACP) to strengthen collaboration on food insecurity, malnutrition, hunger, natural resources management and climate change.
11 December 2012: The UN Collaborative Programme on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (UN-REDD) has released the report of the workshop titled "REDD+ Beyond Carbon: Safeguards and Multiple Benefits."
10 December 2012: Addressing a seminar on "Crops for the 21st Century," José Graziano da Silva, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), described the importance of conserving crop diversity, noting that approximately 7,000 plant species have been consumed as food throughout human history, and that many of these species are disappearing.
10 December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a special edition of Infosylva on the occasion of the conclusion of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The newsletter focuses on the outcomes of Forest Day 6, held on 2 November 2012, on the margins of COP 18.
December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a new interface for FAOSTAT, providing a new easy platform for food and agriculture statistics. FAOSTAT includes raw data, analyses and tools to compare data across a series of thematic areas. The data cover 245 countries and 35 regions from 1961 to the present.
December 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the 22nd edition of its 2012 Infosylva newsletter, which highlights the lowest rates of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon since records began in 1988.
5 December 2012: The UN Collaborative Programme on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (UN-REDD) has announced the contribution by Norway of US$30 million to support the second phase of the UN-REDD National Programme in Viet Nam.
5 December 2012: A new partnership aiming to share knowledge and successful ideas for developing Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) was launched on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC in Doha, Qatar. The partnership will focus on: NAMAs in the context of national development; NAMA preparation for different sectors or technologies; and how to finance NAMAs.
3 December 2012: Lamenting the lack of progress on agriculture in the UNFCCC negotiations, participants at the Agriculture, Landscapes and Rural Development Day explored options for climate-smart agriculture to address mitigation, adaptation and smallholder farmer challenges.
The week will be celebrated under the theme "Forests, their products and services," and will focus on the contribution of forests to the green economy. The main celebrations will be centred on Metsä 2013, the joint meeting of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Timber Committee and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) European Forestry Commission. Additional events will be held throughout Europe.
