27 March 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Government of Finland have established a €14 million partnership titled “Sustainable Forest Management in a Changing Climate.”
26 March 2009: King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden met with Jacques Diouf, Director-General, UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Lennart Båge, President, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and Josette Sheeran, Executive Director, World Food Programme (WFP), to discuss the global food security situation, the impact of climate change on agriculture and the effects of the financial crisis on food prices.
22 March 2009: The 19th session of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Committee on Forestry (COFO) convened from 16-20 March 2009, at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. The meeting attracted over 550 participants from COFO member States, including heads of forestry departments, UN agencies, and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations. In plenary sessions held throughout the week, participants discussed: the FAO Strategy for Forests and Forestry; the Collaborative Partnership on Forests' Strategic Framework on Forests and Climate Change and related topics, including sustainable forest management (SFM) and climate change; forest genetic resources; reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation; access to financing; the impacts of recent economic turbulence on the forest sector; and preparations for the XIII World Forestry Congress.
18 March 2009: The UN-REDD Programme, an initiative on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD), has approved US$18 million for activities in five pilot countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Programme is sponsored by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN Development Programme, and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The approved sum constitutes roughly one-third of available funding under the Programme, and will be dedicated to measures such as monitoring, stakeholder engagement, enhancement of non-carbon benefits, and strengthening of institutional capacity.
16 March 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched the State of the World's Forests 2009. The report was released on the first day of the 19th session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO), which is taking place from 16-20 March 2009, in Rome, Italy. The report notes that the economic crisis and climate change raise the profile of forest management on the global agenda, as demand for products and environmental services is expected to increase in the coming decades.
10 March 2009: In a press release, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) underscored that investing in sustainable forest management could create ten million new “green jobs,” thereby reducing poverty and protecting the environment by contributing to climate change mitigation.
2 March 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released “The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2008,” which recommends that existing responsible fishing practices be more widely implemented and current management plans be expanded to include strategies for coping with climate change.
February 2009: A discussion paper titled “Coping with Water Scarcity: What Role for Biotechnologies?” has been published in FAO's Land and Water Discussion Paper Series.
27 February 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released a study titled “Wood from Planted Forests.” The study underscores the critical role that planted forests play in securing future wood supply and in providing other ecosystem services. The report underscores that the importance of planted forests will increase in the future, given their ability to sequester carbon and contribute other services, such as soil and water conservation.
