FAO, World Bank Release Forest Governance Framework [viewed]

23 May 2011: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Bank's Program on Forests (PROFOR) have released a forest governance guidance framework with applications for developing countries' efforts for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation  in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks), titled "Framework for Assessing and Monitoring Forest Governance."

UNREDD Newsletter18 May 2011: The May 2011 edition of the UN-REDD Programme Newsletter features an article on Asia Pacific and Latin America cross-regional REDD+ exchange, which highlights that delegates from Viet Nam visited Mexico and Ecuador to learn from those countries' experience of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) and community-led forest management, while Mexico and Ecuador learned from Viet Nam's experience in establishing a national REDD+ Programme.

Event: Climate Summit for a Living Himalayas [viewed]

This summit is convened by the Governments of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal with support from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), MacArthur, ICIMOD, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The summit is expected to: outline a 10-year roadmap for adaptation to climate change; develop a proposal to secure all of the eastern Himalaya's temperate and alpine forests and grasslands for ensuring biodiversity persistence and maintaining ecosystem services; and create regional “adaptation expert groups.”

Fourth UN LDC Conference Adopts Istanbul Programme of Action [viewed]

13 May 2011: Over 7,000 participants, including Heads of State and government, international organizations' representatives and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC IV) from 9-13 May 2011. The Conference aimed to assess the results of the 10-year Brussels Action Plan for the LDCs, which was adopted in 2001, and to agree on new measures and strategies for the sustainable development of LDCs into the next decade.

FAO Releases Report on Mega-Fires and Climate Change [viewed]

10 May 2011: At the International Wildland Fire Conference in Sun City, South Africa, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) released a preliminary report titled “Findings and Implications from a Coarse-Scale Global Assessment of Recent Selected Mega-Fires.” The report suggests that changing climate may be exacerbating the growing number of mega-fires and resulting in a positive feedback loop.
