Event: Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture [viewed]

The Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture is organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation of the Netherlands, the World Bank, and the University of Wageningen. It is sponsored by, inter alia, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) of the Consultative Group on Agricultural Research (CGIAR). It will bring together world experts on climate-smart agriculture to provide a synthesis of the current state of knowledge in order to deliver a set of findings based on multi-disciplinary science and best practices. The objectives of the conference are to: take stock of the current state of global knowledge of the science and best practices concerning climate-smart agriculture, in OECD and developing countries, and among private and public stakeholders; identify key priorities for further knowledge development; and summarize key findings for discussion at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC in Durban, South Africa, at the end of 2011, and the follow up global conference on Food Security and Climate Change in Viet Nam in early 2012.

Event: Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair [viewed]

The event is jointly organized by Bioversity International, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the World Food Programme (WFP). The meeting will focus on information technology for development, social media, knowledge sharing and green innovations to address food security and climate change.

UN-REDD Newsletter Highlights National Activities and Progress [viewed]

UNREDD Newsletter30 August 2011: The UN-REDD's August Newsletter reviews several national-level and global-level activities related to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+). The Newsletter states that Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Paraguay and Solomon Islands have begun the implementation phase of their National REDD Programmes, while Nigeria has begun its REDD+ readiness phase with activities including setting safeguards and inventorying national greenhouse gas emissions.

Event: GEO-Carbon Conference: Carbon in a Changing World [viewed]

The meeting is jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Coordination Action on Carbon Observation Systems (COCOS) of the European Commission. The meeting aims to: present the latest scientific developments in understanding the global carbon cycle; present an overview of the building and implementation of a Global Carbon Observing System for land, oceans and atmosphere; and identify progress and gaps in obtaining politically meaningful estimates of regional carbon budgets on land and ocean. Sessions will address: progress in observing techniques and methodology for land, ocean and atmosphere, including network design, space borne techniques and in situ observations; progress in data model fusion; development of regional carbon budgets for land and ocean; verification requirements in a post-Cancun world; and interfacing carbon cycle knowledge with society, needs, uncertainties and challenges.

Event: FAO-OECD Expert Meeting on Greening the Economy with Agriculture [viewed]

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is collaborating with partners in analyzing existing information and developing possible scenarios for Greening the Economy with Agriculture (GEA), including an evaluation of sustainability progress and gaps in the food supply chain to projection of food supply and demand towards 2050, and the joint FAO/Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) meeting will focus on addressing these scenarios. The meeting will be hosted by OECD at its headquarters and FAO will support the participation to this meeting of selected experts and chiefly, those from seven developing countries. Attendance at the Expert Meeting is by invitation only. Agenda items include: low footprint and productive food and agriculture systems; decent rural livelihoods, green jobs and land tenure; resilience to shocks of low-carbon food systems; quality and health of green food; and policy coherence for GEA.

Event: Fifteenth Southern Africa Region Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-15) [viewed]

Convened under the theme “Seasonable Climate Prediction: A Strategic Tool in Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” the 15th Southern Africa Region Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-15) is being organized by the Southern Africa Development Community in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) to develop a consensus climate outlook for the period from October 2011 until March 2012. SARCOF-15 is also expected to address potential climate impacts on sectors including disaster risk management, food security, and health and water resources. The last rainy season in the region will also be assessed.
