FAO, IFAD and WFP Call for Action to Avert Global Food Crisis [viewed]
4 September 2012: In response to increases in maize, wheat and soybean prices similar in magnitude to those seen during the 2007-2008 world food crisis, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) have issued a joint statement calling for urgent action to avert global price shocks.
30 August 2012: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released the “First Status Report on Urban and Peri-urban Horticulture in Africa.” Accompanying strong economic growth and expansion of urban centers in Africa, FAO notes the strong potential contribution of urban gardening to food security, climate change adaptation, and sustainable development. 
29 August 2012: A workshop on "Improving Statistics for Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development – Africa Action Plan" highlighted the importance of ensuring the availability of statistics and data sets on the agriculture and rural sectors in the face of emerging development issues such as food vs. biofuels, climate change, environmental degradation and food security.
August 2012: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) released the “Forest Products Annual Market Review, 2011-2012,” which finds that wood energy constitutes the primary renewable energy source in the UNECE region, and discusses the role of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) mechanisms in carbon markets.
23 August 2012: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN‐REDD Programme) has released the August edition of its newsletter, which reports on the launch by Ecuador of its national UN-REDD programme and a workshop held in Indonesia to solicit the views of stakeholders on the potential co-benefits of REDD+.
