UN Secretary-General Presents Summary Report of High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability [viewed]
16 March 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presented a summary of the Report of the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability to an informal plenary session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) convened for that purpose. The report, titled “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing,” presents recommendations for eradicating poverty and reducing inequality, while combating climate change.
13 March 2012: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held a special high-level meeting with the Bretton Woods institutions, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which highlighted the intersection between green growth, equity and job creation.
27 February 2012: The 56th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) opened on 27 February, focusing on the theme of empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, and sustainable development.
7 February 2012: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued an announcement on the review process for Working Group contributions to the fifth Assessment Report (AR5).
11 January 2012: In his remarks at the Group of 77 chairmanship handover ceremony in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored the importance of the leadership of the G77 in ensuring that "concrete actionable measures" are adopted at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
10 January 2012: Slovak Ambassador Miloš Koterec has been elected to serve as President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Addressing the Council in New York, US, after his election, Koterec called for a new approach to development, including changing old perceptions about development and finding new ways to optimize cooperation among donor and aid recipient countries.
