January 2009: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is co-organizing the international workshop “Future Climate Change Response Research: Learning from IPCC's Fourth Assessment,” which will be held from 21-23 January 2009, at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The event is organized jointly with the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP).
19 December 2008: Among 34 development-related actions put forward by its Second Committee (Economic and Financial), the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a number of resolutions reflecting the breadth of the Committee's agenda, including consideration of the economic ramifications of climate change, and addressing the need for a more equitable international financial system and to bolster developing countries' resilience to financial risk.
15 December 2008: Speaking at a meeting of the UN General Assembly on the “follow-up to the outcome of the Millennium Summit: specific meeting focused on development,” taking place in New York, US, on 15 December 2008, UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro warned that the food, fuel and financial crises threaten to undo poverty reduction efforts.
4 December 2008: The 10th Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans convened from 25-27 November 2008, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and addressed issues related to climate change and the Regional Seas Programmes, and adaptation to climate change vulnerability and sea-level rise.
3 December 2008: The Inter-Agency Standing Committee, comprising nearly 20 UN agencies and aid organizations, appealed for increased global action to boost preparedness for effective response to disasters brought on by climate change.
19 November 2008: The 15th meeting of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Task Group on Data and Scenario Support for
Impact and Climate Analysis (TGICA) opened on 19 November 2008, at the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and will
conclude on 21 November.
18 November 2008: The Second Committee (Economic and
Financial) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), at its 63rd session, approved by
consensus a draft resolution calling on the international community to step up
assistance to countries affected by the El Niño phenomenon.
November 2008: The 38th Session of the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is scheduled to convene from 24-25 November 2008, at World Meteorological Organization (WMO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
November: The second European Science Foundation (ESF)
Science Policy Conference and Assembly will be held from 26-28 November 2008, in
Stockholm, Sweden, and will be organized around the theme “Global Challenges
and the Need for Cooperation: Lessons Learnt from Global Change.”
4 November 2008: The 13th session of the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO) Commission for Hydrology opened on 4 November
2008 at WMO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and will conclude on 12
November. The Commission for Hydrology shapes the water-related activities of
the WMO, and addresses issues related to the basic hydrological observation
network, water resources assessment, flood forecasting and management,
