17 February 2009: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Secretariat is organizing a scoping meeting for its Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) from 13-17 July 2009, in Venice, Italy.
6 February 2009: In a closed meeting convened by the Permanent Mission of Tonga and the Pacific Small Island Developing States, informal consultations were held on 6 February 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on the UN General Assembly (UNGA) draft resolution on “Security and climate change” (A/63/L.8).
February 2009: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scoping meeting for a proposed Special Report on “Extreme events and disasters: managing the risks” will take place from 23-26 March 2009, in Oslo, Norway. The meeting will be hosted by the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority.
27 January 2009: The 30th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will take place on 21-23 April 2009, in Antalya, Turkey. The meeting will focus on the future of the IPCC, in particular the scoping of the Fifth Assessment Report. The Panel will also consider the outcome of the Scoping Meeting for a possible Special Report on “Extreme events and disasters: managing the risks,” which is to be held on 23-26 March 2009, in Oslo, Norway.
29 January 2009: The Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has prepared a draft report of the Panel's 29th session, which took place from 31 August to 4 September 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.
29 January 2009: The Task Group on Data and Scenario Support for Impact and Climate Analysis (TGICA) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a call for nominations for the Fifth Assessment.
19 January 2009: UN officials and representatives of international agencies belonging to the High-Level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis, ministers and several Heads of State will convene from 26-27 January 2009, in Madrid, Spain, for a High-Level Meeting on Food Security for All. Hosted by the Spanish Government, the meeting will review progress since the “High-Level Conference on World Food Security: The Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy,” held in June 2008, during which 181 States and the European Community pledged to alleviate the suffering caused by soaring food prices, stimulate agricultural development and food production, and address obstacles to food access.
15 January 2009: In the foreword to the Worldwatch Institute's State of the World report 2009, which focuses on climate change and is sub-titled “Into a Warming World,” the Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Rajendra Pachauri, notes that the contents of the volume are based on the findings of the Panel's Fourth Assessment Report 2007.
6 January: The first Meeting of the Commission of Experts of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) President on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System took place at UN Headquarters in New York, US, from 4-6 January 2009. The recommendations adopted at the end of the meeting include the need for reforms to establish regulations that enable simultaneously pursuing long term objectives, such as sustainable and equitable growth, responsible use of natural resources and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and more immediate concerns, including addressing the challenges posed by the food and financial crises.
January 2009: The first Lead Author Meeting for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) will be hosted by the Brazilian Government, and will convene from 26-30 January 2009, in São José dos Campos, São Paulo state, Brazil.
