In December 2010, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 2012 as the "International Year for Sustainable Energy for All" (Resolution 65/151), aimed at creating "an enabling environment for the promotion and use of new and renewable energy technologies, including measures to improve access to such technologies."
20 December 2010: In a plenary session held on 20 December 2010, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Report of its Second Committee on sustainable development (A/65/436), which includes draft resolutions on "Protection of global climate for present and future generations of humankind" and "International Strategy for Disaster Reduction."
This informal thematic debate aims to promote understanding on how effective investment policies, practices and sustainable urban management can reduce risk and exposure to disasters. Special focus will be on rapidly expanding urban areas, where risk, population and economic assets are concentrated. Building on the High-level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (September 2010, New York), which acknowledged that disaster risk reduction and increasing resilience to natural hazards can accelerate the achievement of the MDGs, the debate will underscore the linkages between disaster risk reduction, poverty eradication and sustainable development. The Panel will include two interactive panel discussions with high-level experts. The concept paper and draft programme for the debate were issued by General Assembly President Joseph Deiss on 21 January 2011.
In December 2010, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted by consensus the draft resolution recommended by the Second Committee (65/160) on Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa (UNCCD). It agreed to hold a one-day, high-level meeting, in September 2011, on “addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication,” in order to help raise awareness at the highest level, reaffirm the fulfillment of all commitments to the Convention and its 10-year strategic plan and framework (2008-2018), and ensure a higher priority for desertification, land degradation and drought at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). A letter from the President of the GA, dated 22 July 2011, provides the agenda for the meeting and other information: http://www.un.org/en/ga/president/65/letters/PGA%20Letter%20-%20HL%20Meetings%20in%20September%20-%2022%20July%202011.pdf.
