29 September 2009: During the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) high-level debate, Samuel Abal, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration of Papua New Guinea, commented on the important role forests play in combating climate change, and urged the Assembly to ensure that resources are made available to the UN initiative on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (the UN-REDD programme).

26 September 2009: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) annual high-level debate heard several leaders of small island developing States (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs) focusing on climate change.
23 September 2009: On the sidelines of the opening of the 64th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hosted a high-level event on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). Many Heads of State and government in attendance committed to take action on this issue.
4 September 2009: Working Group (WG) III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) held the second lead author meeting for the Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) from 1-4 September 2009, in Oslo, Norway. The meeting was preceded by an expert meeting on Modeling Renewable Energies, held from 30-31 August 2009.
17 September 2009: The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the UN General Assembly has decided to discuss the protection of global climate for present and future generations.
16 September 2009: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has appointed environmental modelling and systems expert Joseph Alcamo as its first Chief Scientist.
15 September 2009: Opening the 64th annual session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), incoming President Ali Treki (Libya) urged participants at the upcoming Climate Change Summit to agree on recommendations for the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The Summit will be convened by the UN Secretary-General on 22 September in New York, US.
