Inaugural FfD Forum Begins with 2030 Agenda Challenges, Implementation, Follow-Up [viewed]

ECOSOC18 April 2016: The inaugural session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) forum on financing for development follow-up (FfD Forum) opened in New York, US, with ministers, high-level officials, heads of UN departments and agencies and other stakeholders discussing current global economic challenges, including slow economic growth and massive waves of forced migration, the need for concerted action, and innovative development financing options, as well as their contributions to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA).

IPCC Plans Special Reports on a 1.5°C Limit, Land Use and Oceans During AR6 Cycle [viewed]

ipcc4313 April 2016: During the 43rd session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-43), the Panel considered its role in supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement as the IPCC embarks on its sixth assessment cycle. In planning for the cycle, the IPCC decided to undertake three special reports (SRs), flag cities as an SR for the seventh assessment report (AR7) cycle, refine the IPCC 2006 Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories through a methodology report and integrate regional aspects more thoroughly into AR6. It was also announced that Abdalah Mokssit (Morocco) will be the next IPCC Secretary.

Member States Negotiate FfD Forum Outcome [viewed]

FfD13 April 2016: UN Member States have continued negotiations on the conclusions and recommendations of the upcoming UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Forum on Financing for Development Follow-up (FfD Forum). A draft outcome, which was circulated on 7 April 2016, is the subject of ongoing consultations. Jean-Francis Regis Zinsou, Permanent Representative of Benin, and Vladimir Drobnjak, Permanent Representative of Croatia, are co-facilitating the consultations.

UN Statistical Commission Agrees on SDG Indicator Framework as "Practical Starting Point" [viewed]

47unsc11 March 2016: The UN Statistical Commission (UNSC) agreed, "as a practical starting point," with the global indicator framework proposed by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs), noting that the indicators are "subject to further technical refinement." The Commission also took decisions on capacity building for national statistical systems, and climate change and governance statistics.

Study Calls for Indigenous Participation in Ocean Governance [viewed]

dspd-indigenous_people19 February 2016: A study conducted by a member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) calls for mechanisms to facilitate indigenous peoples' full participation in decision-making processes related to the oceans, and to secure their free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) for activities that have a direct impact on them. The recommendations of the study are expected to be considered by PFII 15 in May 2016.
