11 December 2012: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution on oceans and the law of the sea (A/67/L.21) by a recorded vote of 125 in favor to one against (Turkey), with four abstentions (Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Venezuela).
28 November 2012: The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has approved draft resolution (A/C.2/67/L.43) on “Protection of Global Climate for Present and Future Generations of Humankind.” The draft was approved in New York, US, on 28 November 2012.
12 November 2012: The UN Secretary-General's Oceans Compact was the subject of a briefing held on 12 November 2012, in New York, US. The briefing was hosted by Achim Steiner, Chair of the High-level Committee on Programmes (HLCP) and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and Patricia O'Brien, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs.
13 November: President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Vuk Jeremić, has called for States to reach consensus on the membership of the working group on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a speech to the UNGA Second Committee. He also stressed coordination and complementarity between the SDGs and the post-2015 development agenda.
9 November 2012: Experts from 56 countries met from 5-9 November 2012, in Vigo, Spain, to work on the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on Climate Change. The IPCC's Working Group III focus its work on mitigation aspects.
9 November 2012: UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Vuk Jeremić convened an informal meeting of the Assembly to address issues arising from Hurricane Sandy. The session detailed the monies allocated for affected countries from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on countries to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
5 November 2012: In meetings of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee, Member States called for increased efforts to address agriculture and food security in the international development agenda, stressing that climate change exacerbates food security concerns.
16 October 2012: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee convened a special event on “Conceptualizing a Set of Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 16 October 2012. The event served as an initial opportunity for participants to discuss the SDGs, in light of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) outcome decision to develop a proposal for SDGs to be considered during the UNGA's 68th session.
5 October 2012: The Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is inviting member governments to comment on second order drafts of its Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), in the latest stage of its multi-stage review process.
1 October 2012: On the final day of the High-level Debate of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), world leaders called for urgent action to address climate change while expressing hope for progress at the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC, taking place in November-December this year.
