Report of Committee for Development Policy Reviews Indicators of LDCs [viewed]

May 2011: The report of the 13th session of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP), which took place from 21-25 March 2011, has just been released. The report reviews the Committee's consideration of the following themes: education for all, issues related to the Least Developed Countries (including monitoring of the development progress of Equatorial Guinea and Samoa), and migration and development.

Event: IPCC 34th Session [viewed]

The 34th session of the IPCC will be held back to back with the first joint Sessions of IPCC Working Groups I and II to approve and accept the IPCC Special Report on “Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation.” The session will also continue consideration of the IPCC review, among other matters.

This meeting will be held back to back with IPCC 34. It is scheduled to approve the Special Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on “Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation” Summary for Policymakers (SPM) and accept the underlying document.

CSD 19 Concludes Without Agreement [viewed]

14 May 2011: The 19th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 19), which convened from 2-14 May 2011, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, focused on developing policy recommendations related to transport, chemicals, hazardous waste, mining and the 10-year framework of programmes (10YFP) on sustainable consumption and production (SCP), but concluded without adopting these decisions.

IPCC's 33rd Session Establishes Executive Committee, Accepts Summary for Policy Makers of SRREN [viewed]

13 May 2011: The 33rd session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has decided to establish an Executive Committee, adopted a Conflict of Interest Policy, and introduced several changes to its rules of procedure. IPCC 33 also accepted the Summary for Policy Makers (SPM) of the Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) approved by Working Group III.

Global Assessment Report Launched at Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

10 May 2011: Delegates from 175 governments and over 176 regional and national organizations convened on 10 May 2011 for the week-long Third Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, organized by the UN Secretariat for the International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN/ISDR). The Platform will focus on the links between the rising cost of disasters, how local communities adapt to climate change, and the status of poverty eradication efforts before the 2015 deadline set by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA).

IPCC Releases Summary of the Special Report on Renewable Energy [viewed]

9 May 2011: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a Summary for Policy Makers of the “Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN).” The report was released on 9 May 2011, following its approval at the 11th Session of IPCC Working Group III in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Fourth LDC Conference Opens in Istanbul [viewed]

9 May 2011: Over 7,000 participants, including Heads of State and government and international organizations' representatives, are gathering in Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) from 9-13 May 2011. The meeting aims to assess the implementation of the 2001 Brussels Programme of Action and reach a new agreement to continue supporting the 48 countries classified as LDCs.
