Strategic Alignment Group Maps UNGA Agenda with SDG Targets [viewed]

UNGA 2nd Committee - Economic and Financial21 July 2016: A group of five Permanent Representatives has issued a "mapping assessment" for reducing overlap between the UN General Assembly (UNGA) agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and enhancing their synergy and coherence. Their report, submitted to UNGA President Mogens Lykketoft, assesses how the targets of each Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) are substantively addressed by the UNGA's agenda, the agendas of the UNGA Committees, and the agendas of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and its Commissions.

Event: High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2017 [viewed]

The fifth High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), convening under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will take place from 10-19 July 2017, including a three-day ministerial meeting of the Forum on 17-19 July. The theme of the 2017 session will be 'Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world,' as decided in UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution A/70/299. The set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be reviewed in depth will be: Goal 1 (End poverty in all its forms everywhere); Goal 2 (End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture); Goal 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages); Goal 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls); Goal 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation); Goal 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development); and Goal 17 (Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development), which will be considered each year.

Event: 71st General Debate of UN General Assembly [viewed]

The General Debate of the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 71) will begin on 20 September 2016 and will take place during "up to 9 working days" (para. 2, Resolution 57/301). As announced by UNGA 71 President-elect Peter Thomson, the theme of the General Debate is 'The Sustainable Development Goals: a universal push to transform our world'. The opening of the 71st Session of the General Assembly will take place on 13 September.

DCF Addresses Development Financing, Policy Instruments for 2030 Agenda, Paris Agreement [viewed]

ecosoc7022 July 2016: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change will require “an unprecedented multilateral cooperation,” underlined participants at the UN Economic and Social Council's (ECOSOC) fifth biennial high-level meeting of the Development Cooperation Forum (DCF). During the two-day meeting, representatives from governments, UN agencies, and civil society discussed the role of various types of development financing and related policy changes necessary for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and other international agreements signed in 2015.

HLPF Hears First-ever Voluntary National Reviews on SDGs [viewed]

hlpf_ban_ki_moon19 July 2016: Thirteen governments gave the first-ever Voluntary National Reviews, reporting on efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in their countries. The VNR presentations began on the second day of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) Ministerial Segment. The reports - provided by Mexico, Morocco, Switzerland, Montenegro, Sierra Leone, Norway, Madagascar, Georgia, Turkey, Finland, Samoa, Uganda and Germany - emphasized the need to: modify existing national economic and development planning processes; engage different government departments and broader technical expertise; develop indicators and collect data; and ensure high-level leadership.

UNSG Candidates Highlight Gender, UN Reform, Inclusiveness [viewed]

The event was globally televised live by Al Jazeera Media Network.
