ECOSOC Releases Synthesis of Intergovernmental Submissions [viewed]

ecosoc7022 June 2016: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has released a ‘Synthesis of voluntary submissions by functional commission of the Economic and Social Council and other intergovernmental bodies and forums (E/HLPF/2016/5),' which highlights the bodies' contributions to implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development so far. The synthesis serves as a substantive input to the 2016 session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

Policy Update #34: Monthly Forecast: July 2016 [viewed]

All eyes will be on its discussions regarding follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the presentations of the first governments to volunteer for national reviews of their progress in implementing the SDGs.

Event: World Forum on Sustainable Development Data (World Data Forum) [viewed]

The first UN World Data Forum (WDF) will be hosted by Statistics South Africa. It is expected to bring together public and private measurements experts, statistical producers, information system specialists, and users, as well as all other key stakeholders to discuss data for sustainable development. Organized by the UN High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (HLG), the UN WDF is intended to serve as a platform for intensifying cooperation on data for sustainable development with multiple stakeholders, including information technology professionals, geospatial information managers, data scientists, data users, and members from civil society. Organization of a World Forum on Sustainable Development Data was one of the main recommendations of the UN Secretary-General's Independent Expert and Advisory Group on Data Revolution for Sustainable Development.

Event: Sixth Session of the UN-GGIM [viewed]

The Sixth Session of the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) will bring together senior executives from national geospatial information, statistical authorities within Member States and international geospatial experts from across the globe to discuss the global geospatial information agenda. The Committee will address, among other issues: activities related to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; geospatial information and services for disasters; determination of global fundamental geospatial data themes; trends in national institutional arrangements in global geospatial information management; adoption and implementation of standards for the global geospatial information community; integration of geospatial, statistical and other related information; and application of geospatial information to land administration and management. The formal session of the Committee of Experts will convene from 3-5 August 2016, and will be preceded by a number of related side events on 1-2 August 2016.

Member States Elect Peter Thomson, Fiji, as UNGA 71 President [viewed]

Fiji Flag13 June 2016: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) elected Peter Thomson, Permanent Representative of Fiji to the UN, as the President of the 71st session of the UNGA. Thomson will replace Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark, who is serving as the President of UNGA 70.

Experts Discuss Aligning Indicators for SDGs and Sendai Framework for DRR [viewed]

sendai_framework1 June 2016: During a briefing on the theme, 'Monitoring the Sendai Framework for DRR 2015-2030 and promoting coherence with the SDGs,' experts discussed ways of ensuring coherence between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicator framework and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), as well as the latest updates on the work on the indicators for the two agendas. The briefing was organized by the Permanent Missions of Finland and Jamaica, in collaboration with the UN Office for DRR (UNISDR) and the UN Statistics Division (UNSD) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

UNCCD Executive Secretary Briefs UN Security Council [viewed]

UNCCD logo​26 May 2016: While not offering a silver bullet, a land-based approach involving increased investment in land rehabilitation for frontline villages and communities would be “cheaper and more effective than investing in walls, wars and relief,” stressed UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Executive Secretary Monique Barbut at a UN Security Council briefing in New York, US on 26 May 2016. The briefing aimed to enhance understanding of the security implications of climate change in the Sahel and was addressed by representatives of more than 15 countries, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.

IPoA Mid-term Review Calls for Greater Support to LDCs [viewed]

review29 May 2016: The Mid-term Review of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for the Decade 2011-2020 has closed with a call for greater support to the world's more vulnerable countries. The review focused on the 48 LDCs and their progress over the past five years, and on finding ways to accelerate their sustainable development. The conference resulted in a political declaration that had been negotiated among UN Member States in the months leading up to the review.
