The Adaptation Committee was established to promote the implementation of enhanced action on adaptation in a coherent manner under the UNFCCC through: providing technical support and guidance to Parties; sharing relevant information, knowledge, experience and good practices; promoting synergy and strengthening engagement with national, regional and international organizations, centers and networks; providing information and recommendations for consideration by the COP when providing guidance on means to incentivize the implementation of adaptation actions; and considering information communicated by Parties on monitoring and review of adaptation actions, support provided and received.

Event: 16th Meeting of the Consultative Group of Experts on National Communications from Non-Annex I Parties to the UNFCCC [viewed]

The 16th Meeting of the Consultative Group of Experts (CGE) on National Communications from Non-Annex I Parties to the UNFCCC will meet in Bonn, Germany. The CGE was established by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC in order to improve national communications and the Biennial Update Reports (BURs) from developing countries through technical advice and support. This group is the main technical support element under the Convention to assist developing country Parties in meeting reporting obligations. The CGE meets to develop its work programme, revise its rules of procedure, assess progress in implementing its work programme and provide recommendations. It also organizes workshops for the preparation of national communications and BURs using CGE training materials.

IGOs, Development Banks and UN Agencies React to Paris Agreement [viewed]

paris_agreementDecember 2015: Upon adoption of the Paris Agreement by the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris, France, a broad array of stakeholders, including UN agencies, development banks and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), responded to the outcome reached by the 196 UNFCCC Parties. The Agreement, which will be opened for signature in April 2016, aims to strengthen the global response to climate change, hold the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C.

Event: Second Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage [viewed]

The Second Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage Associated with Climate Change Impacts. The meeting is expected to discuss, inter alia: engagement of Executive Committee members in external activities; the Committee's two-year workplan and the delivery of activities; progress and intersessional e-brainstroming related to the Warsaw Mechanism's various action areas and related activities; specific work to be undertaken in the first half of 2016; any relevant requests arising from the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC; and arrangements for the Mechanism's operationalization.

The Warsaw Mechanism, which was established at COP 19 in November 2013, aims to address loss and damage associated with the impacts of climate change, including extreme events and slow onset events in developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. The Mechanism's Executive Committee aims to guide the implementation of the functions of Mechanism, and is guided by and accountable to, and reports annually to, the COP.

December 2015 Climate Finance Update [viewed]

December 2015 Climate Finance Update21 December 2015: During the month of December, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the World Bank, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Adaptation Fund and the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), among others, reported on new financing pledges and other climate finance news. Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), climate funds and UN initiatives launched studies, reports and briefs on, inter alia, climate risks and resilience, and adaptation finance. A large number of climate finance-related side events were held during the UN Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015.

Non-State Actors Sign Paris Pledge for Action [viewed]

cop2116 December 2015: A call to action to support the Paris Agreement has been launched, with almost 700 major cities, regions, companies and investors as initial signatories. Under the Paris Pledge for Action, or 'L'Appel de Paris,' these signatories commit to aid in the quick and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement and to contribute to accelerating the necessary transformation to combat climate change.
