UNFCCC Releases Technical Paper to Aid Streamlining ADP Texts [viewed]

UNFCCC6 November 2015: At the 11th part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-11), held October 2015, Parties requested the UNFCCC Secretariat to draft a technical paper identifying areas of closely related concepts, duplication and possible areas for streamlining in the draft Paris agreement and decisions. The paper (ADP.2015.12.InformalNote) has been released for Parties' consideration ahead of the Paris Climate Change Conference.

GCF Board Approves First Projects [viewed]

green-climate-fund-new6 November 2015: The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is set to fund its first projects after the Board approved eight proposals at its 11th meeting (GCFB 11). The approved funding, which is contingent on fulfillment of specified conditions for seven of the projects, totals US$168 million. At the meeting, the Board also adopted an initial monitoring and accountability framework for accredited entities, a process to develop a strategic plan, a decision on the readiness programme and an updated set of administrative guidelines on procurement.

Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action Registers 2,245 Commitments [viewed]

UNFCCC Lima and Paris Climate Change Conferences6 November 2015: The UN, the French and Peruvian Governments, and businesses have added a total of 2,245 commitments to the Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA) portal, launched in 2014 by the Peruvian Presidency of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC. The information released brought the total number of commitments registered in the NAZCA portal to 6,649.

Fiji Submits INDC [viewed]

Fiji Flag5 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Fiji has formally submitted its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC), bringing the total number of Parties that have made their submissions to 157. Fiji's INDC is specific to the national energy sector, where it aims to achieve a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario by 2030.

PA13 Hears Partner Updates, PMR Publishes Report on Carbon Leakage [viewed]

pmr30 October 2015: The 13th meeting of the Partnership Assembly (PA13) of the Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) and accompanying workshops received updates on mitigation initiatives from around the world, including energy policy developments in Chile, the status of China's carbon market developments, the Norwegian Carbon Credit Procurement Program, and climate mitigation initiatives in Sri Lanka. PA13 also received updates from the UNFCCC on progress towards Paris and from the World Bank on its Carbon Pricing Initiatives and Transformative Carbon Asset Facility.

UNEP DTU Releases Report on Benefits of Energy Efficiency Measures [viewed]

multiple_benefits_of_measures13 October 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) DTU Partnership (UDP) has published a report, titled 'The Multiple Benefits of Measures to Improve Energy Efficiency,' analyzing the various benefits of national energy efficiency programmes. The report comes as Parties to the UNFCCC are preparing their national climate action plans for the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21). UDP highlights that energy efficiency is a critical mitigation option for meeting emission reduction commitments.

UNFCCC Releases Synthesis Report on INDC Aggregate Effect [viewed]

UNFCCC30 October 2015: As mandated by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC at its 20th session, the Secretariat has released a synthesis report on the aggregate effect of the intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) submitted by Parties as of 1 October 2015. The report underscores that, while the INDCs could deliver sizable emissions reductions and slow emissions growth over the next 10 years, their implementation will not result in aggregate annual emissions consistent with least-cost 2°C scenarios levels.

The 16 selected initiatives come from around the world and a variety of sectors, highlighting inspiring mitigation and adaptation activities. The announcement of the 2015 Lighthouse Activities comes as Parties to the UNFCCC prepare to adopt a universal climate change agreement at the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015.
