UNFCCC Posts Documents to REDD-Web Platform [viewed]

13feb09-cover0-tn11 February 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has added new documents to its information-sharing web platform related to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD), which was created in response to UNFCCC Decision 2/CP.13 (Reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries: approaches to stimulate action). The new documents include information on remote sensing submitted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Global Forest Resources assessment (FRA 2010).

New Chair of the CDM Executive Board Stresses Role of International Emissions Offsetting in Response to Climate Change [viewed]

UNFCCC Secretariat11 February 2009: The first meeting of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board (EB) in 2009 is taking place in Bonn, Germany, from 11-13 February 2009. At the meeting, in assuming the Chair of the CDM EB, Lex de Jonge underlined the need to scale up and enhance the CDM to release its full potential, underlining that it stimulates investment in green growth in developing countries, engages the private sector in climate change action, and provides countries with some flexibility in meeting their emission reduction targets.

4 February 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released two reports from sessions held in Poznan, Poland, from 1-10 December 2008: the Report of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol on its resumed sixth session and the Report of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation on its 29th session.

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Party Submissions [viewed]

6 February 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released submissions by the Republic of Korea, detailing the proposals to: establish a Registry of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) of developing countries at the UNFCCC Secretariat as part of the agreed outcome to be adopted at COP 15 in Copenhagen in December 2009; and recognize carbon credit for the verifiable mitigation arising from certain NAMAs as is agreed and contained in paragraph 1(b)(ii) of the Bali Action Plan.

5 February 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has notified parties and observer States to the UNFCCC and its Kyoto Protocol, UN specialized agencies, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of the forthcoming seventh session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 7) and fifth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 5), which will take place in Bonn, Germany, from 29 March-8 April 2009.

UN Secretary-General and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Emphasize Accelerating Action on Climate Change in Statements at Delhi Sustainable Development Summit [viewed]

5 February 2009: During the 2009 Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, which is organized around the theme “Towards Copenhagen: an equitable and ethical approach” and is taking place from 5-7 February 2009, in New Delhi, India, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that ignoring or underestimating the threat of climate change would lead to increased poverty and hardship. Ban, who received the Sustainable Development Leadership Award at the Summit, underlined that tackling this challenge requires “all our leadership, all our commitment, all our ingenuity,” but that it also provides an “opportunity to make progress on a wide range of sustainable development issues.”

Date and Venue for the Ninth Session of the AWG-KP and Seventh Session of the AWG-LCA Set [viewed]

February 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that, following consultations with the Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP), Harald Dovland (Norway), and the Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), Michael Zammit Cutajar (Malta), and taking into account guidance provided by the Subsidiary Body for Implementation, the ninth session of the AWG-KP and the seventh session of the AWG-LCA will take place at the UN Conference Centre of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, from 28 September-9 October 2009.
