13 May 2009: UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Executive Secretary Luc Gnacadja told a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York, US, that the convergence of the global food, fuel, financial and economic crises, against a backdrop of climate change, present an opportunity for action to reshape the development agenda and should not be wasted.
4 May 2009: Climate change featured heavily on the agenda of the eighth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF8), which convened from 20 April-1 May 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. After a late night session on the final day of negotiations, UNFF8 delegates adopted a resolution on forests in a changing environment, which encourages member States to, inter alia, strengthen the implementation of sustainable forest management (SFM) in addressing the challenges faced by forests due to climate change, forest degradation, and biodiversity and forest cover loss.
21 April 2009: Climate change featured heavily on the agenda of the second day of deliberations at the eighth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF8), currently convening at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The central focus of the discussion was the role of forests in a future climate regime.
22 March 2009: On the occasion of World Water Day, which was observed on 22 March 2009, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) highlighted the potential benefits of investing in the world's freshwaters, including the potential benefits to the global economic recovery and to accelerating a response to climate change.
13 February 2009: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has submitted to the fifth Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 5) a proposal stressing the need to include in the UNFCCC negotiation agenda practical approaches, such as biochar-related (charcoal) mitigation, focusing on increased land productivity.
6 February 2009: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has released information concerning the scientific conference to be held in conjunction with the next meeting of its Committee on Science and Technology. The conference will consider “Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.”
December 2008: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) presented a submission, titled Use of biochar (charcoal) to replenish soil carbon pools, restore soil fertility and sequester carbon dioxide, to the fourth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA4), which convened in Poznań, Poland, from 1-10 December 2008.
December 2008: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has invited comments on a draft report it commissioned entitled “Policies for fighting water scarcity and combating desertification.”
19 November 2008: Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the
UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) addressed the African
Conference of Ministers in Charge of Environment on Climate Change for
Post-2012, and underscored the urgency of incorporating land and soil into the
climate change dialogue.
14 November 2008: The first Special Session of the Committee
on Science and Technology (CST S-1) and the seventh session of the Committee
for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 7) of the UN
Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) convened in Istanbul, Turkey, from
3-14 November 2008.
