World Wetlands Day Celebrates "Wetlands For Our Future" [viewed]

Ramsar2 February 2015: The annual World Wetlands Day was celebrated on 2 February 2015, marking the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, and helping to raise public awareness of the value and importance of wetlands. Held under the theme ‘Wetlands for our future,' it sought to highlight the many ways in which we can all contribute to their conservation and restoration.

Event: Webinar on Increasing Awareness of Soil Biodiversity and Carbon [viewed]

This webinar, titled “Learning from wetlands – the case for dry soils,” is being convened by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the Ramsar Convention Secretariat and Wetlands International. It aims to build knowledge and expand the understanding of policy and scientific issues related to reducing emissions from soil carbon based on lessons learned from peatlands and other wetlands. The webinar will address topics, such as: building scientific knowledge on soil carbon; establishing policy and regulatory frameworks; and implementing projects and programmes for reducing emissions. The webinar is targeted towards Focal Points, national biodiversity managers, sustainable land management (SLM) experts and other technical specialists in Africa. Outcomes include the identification of priority actions to enhance the consideration of soil biodiversity and carbon for implementing the CBD. Those who are interested should register before 6 February 2015.

Nordic and Baltic Wetlands Conference Identifies Climate Change Impacts on Wetlands [viewed]

Ramsar12 September 2013: The Nordic and Baltic Wetlands Conference was organized around the theme 'Baltic Wetlands in a time of climate change- mitigation, resilience and adaptation.' The event was held as part of the Greenland Chairmanship (2012-2014) of the NorBalWet, a regional initiative for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) that aims to contribute to more effective conservation and wise use of wetlands and enhanced international wetlands cooperation in the Nordic-Baltic region.

Ramsar, Conservation International Enhance Cooperation [viewed]

15 April 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) and Conservation International (CI) have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the sidelines of the 46th meeting of the Ramsar Standing Committee to provide a framework for future cooperation.

Ramsar STRP Agrees on Draft Work Plan for 2013-2015 [viewed]

1 March 2013: The newly-appointed Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) held its 17th meeting (STRP 17) from 25 February-1 March 2013, in Gland, Switzerland, during which members established a draft work plan for the 2013-2015 triennium.

TEEB Report Highlights the Ecosystem Services Provided by Wetlands [viewed]

1 February 13: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and partners have launched the report "The Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity (TEEB) for Water and Wetlands." The report urges a major shift in attitudes towards wetlands, to recognize their value in delivering water, raw materials and food, as well as their role in maintaining people's livelihoods and the sustainability of the world's economies.

Ramsar Announces Mangrove Rehabilitation Project in the Marshall Islands [viewed]

16 January 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported on an upcoming mangrove rehabilitation and replanting project in two of the Marshall Islands' wetlands of international importance, Namdrik and Jaluit Atolls.

Ramsar Evaluates Risk to Wetlands from Climate Change-Induced Sea-Level Rise [viewed]

3 December 2012: The Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has released a Briefing Note, titled "Evaluating the risk to Ramsar Sites from climate change induced sea level rise," together with its web map service and data sets. These resources present a preliminary assessment of coastal Ramsar Sites that are at risk of inundation as a consequence of sea level rise.

Guest Article #83: Climate Change and Wetlands: Implications for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands [viewed]

Following intensive deliberations in Bucharest, Romania, in July 2012, the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands adopted Resolution XI.14 on Climate Change and Wetlands, acknowledging the significance of climate change for the ecosystem services that wetlands can deliver to human societies. This is the third Ramsar Resolution that affirms the potential implications of climate change for the conservation and wise use of wetlands, and it reiterates the commitment of Contracting Parties to addressing all issues affecting the maintenance and wise use of the values that wetlands provide to people.
