Event: Signature Ceremony of the Paris Climate Agreement: High-Level Luncheon [viewed]

On the occasion of the signing ceremony of the Paris Agreement on climate change, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will host a high-level luncheon bringing together governments, business, investors, civil society and the UN to signal support for translating the agreement into action. It will focus on the scale and pace of the market transformation required to achieve a safer, healthier and more prosperous future. The luncheon is being organized with support from the UN Global Compact, and is open to UN Global Compact company representatives at the chief executive level.

Event: Oceans and Climate Meeting in Preparation for Oceans Day at UNFCCC COP 22 [viewed]

This is the third in a series of initial discussion meetings on oceans and climate change, which aim to: prioritize actions to be undertaken during the next 12 months to advance specific aspects of the oceans and climate agenda; help mobilize a group of high-level leaders on oceans and climate to provide the necessary political impetus and support; consider which collaborating organizations have the comparative advantage and willingness to take the lead on specific priority actions; and initiate work with the Government of Morocco and others to ensure oceans issues are prominent at the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC, in particular, through the convening of Oceans Day. Priority actions will draw from recommendations on oceans and climate related to mitigation, adaptation, displacement, financing, and capacity development, laid out at Oceans Day during UNFCCC COP 21.

Implementation Update: Palestine Joins UNFCCC, China, EU, India, US Announce Climate Actions [viewed]

UNFCCC2 April 2016: Parties to the UNFCCC are making major announcements related to the Paris Agreement and its objectives. The actions described in this Update are also important for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts). A number news items reported here will also advance SDG 7, especially Target 7.2 to "increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix."

March 2016 Transparency Update [viewed]

enlighten_unfccc_mrv31 March 2016: During the month of March, the UNFCCC Secretariat published a number of reports in accordance with the current transparency system of the UNFCCC. These include an information note on the creation of a public registry for nationally determined contributions (NDCs), 19 true-up period review reports (TPRs) and the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory review report for Canada. Two UNFCCC meetings of lead reviewers also took place and the outcomes were subsequently published. In addition, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) en.lighten initiative and the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV announced transparency-related capacity-building initiatives.

UNFCCC Reports on Technical Assessment Process for Forest Reference Levels [viewed]

UNFCCC Reports on Capacity-Building Activities [viewed]

UNFCCC11 March 2016: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published two reports to support Parties in reviewing progress and effectiveness of capacity-building efforts under the Convention. The reports compile information relevant to the implementation of the framework for capacity building in developing countries adopted in the Marrakesh Accords (decision 2/CP.7) and the Durban Forum, established by decision 2/CP.17 as a space for in-depth discussion on capacity building.
