Iceland, Republic of Korea, Serbia Submit INDCs [viewed]

iceland_korea_serbia30 June 2015: Iceland, the Republic of Korea and Serbia have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the UNFCCC Secretariat, bringing the total number of Parties to do so to 44. According to their respective INDCs, Iceland aims to contribute to European countries' collective target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 40% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, the Republic of Korea plans to reduce its GHG emissions by 37% from the business-as-usual (BAU) level by 2030, and Serbia intends to reduce GHG emissions by 9.8% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

ITPGR Benefit-Sharing Project in India Identifies Climate-Resilient Crop Varieties [viewed]

ITPGR1 July 2015: The Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) has supported a project across several states in Northern India, with focus on screening varieties of rice and other crops for climate resilience and storing the material in newly established seed banks. The project was implemented by the civil society organization Gene Campaign, in collaboration with Bioversity International and with the participation of 25,000 farmers.

China Submits INDC [viewed]

Flag of China30 June 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that the Government of China has submitted its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC). According to its INDC, China intends to peak carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by around 2030 and lower CO2 emissions per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 60-65% from 2005 levels by 2030. China is the 43rd Party to the UNFCCC to formally submit its INDC.

UN-REDD Reports on 2014 Activities [viewed]

unreddJune 2015: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) released its 'Sixth Consolidated Annual Progress Report,' which covers the Programme's achievements in 2014. Overall, the report notes that in 2014, 56 countries participated as partner countries with US$47.8 million in funding allocated to activities in 2014.

Montpellier Declaration Urges Coordinated Action on Climate Change, Land Degradation [viewed]

desertifactions13 June 2015: More than 300 participants from 57 countries attending Désertif'actions 2015 (D'a15) - an international civil society forum on combating desertification and land degradation - adopted the Montpellier Declaration, highlighting the “undeniable link” between land degradation, sustainable development and international stability, “in a context of present and future impacts of global warming.”

Event: World Summit Climate and Territories [viewed]

Hosted by Rhône-Alpes Region, the World Summit Climate and Territories is organized by a variety of networks and organizations. It has two objectives: to present concrete greenhouse gas emission reduction commitments from a range of territorial players; and to submit specific proposals for commitments from non-state actors to be acknowledged in a climate agreement in Paris. The commitments and proposals will be submitted to the French Presidency of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), as well as to all UNFCCC parties.

World Desertification Day 2015 Showcases Champions of Land Restoration [viewed]

wdcd201517 June 2015: The global observance event for the 2015 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD), which took place in Milan, Italy, on 17 June as part of the ongoing UN EXPO Milano, featured high-level speakers, visual and verbal testimonies from community representatives and well-known personalities, and a live music show by the Senegalese band, Titi & Baribagass. The celebrations recognized the 2015 winners of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) 'Land for Life Award' and international short-writing and cartoon contests, as well as 34 new National Drylands Champions from Brazil and Portugal.
