UNFCCC Releases Provisional Agendas for May Session [viewed]

UNFCCC4 March 2016: The first meeting of the subsidiary bodies of the UNFCCC since the Paris Agreement was adopted in December 2015 will take place from 16-26 May 2016, in Bonn, Germany. The Secretariat has released the provisional agendas of all three bodies that will be meeting, namely the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1) and the 44th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 44) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 44).

UNFF Highlights Interlinkages Between International Arrangement on Forests, Paris Agreement [viewed]

UNFF26 February 2016: The Secretariat of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) has published a policy brief exploring opportunities for greater coherence with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) arising from the Paris Agreement and the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF) beyond 2015. The brief focuses on forest-based climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, forest financing and the 'global stocktake' under the Paris Agreement.

UNCCD Aligns Reporting Templates with New Progress Indicators, SDG Target 15.3 [viewed]

UNCCD logoFebruary 2016: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) released revised reporting templates with which countries can report on progress during the 2014-2015 reporting period. The template revision follows a decision of the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UNCCD, which met in October 2015. The decision called for new guidance on aligning the reporting framework with new progress indicators as well as the Sustainable Development Goals' (SDG) target on land degradation neutrality (LDN), which was adopted in September 2015.

Event: Africa Carbon Forum 2016 [viewed]

The Eight Africa Carbon Forum (ACF) will inform participants on the latest investment, finance and development opportunities relating to climate change. Issues for discussion include: opportunities for Africa in a post-Paris global landscape; policy options and opportunities for transformational development in the region presented by Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs); innovative projects, programmes and investment opportunities for climate-resilient development, such as the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative and African Initiative on Adaptation and Loss and Damage; sources of climate finance and how to access them, including market-based approaches to sustainable development; results-based financing; and cooperative initiatives under the Nairobi Framework (NF) Partnership, which aims to improve the level of participation of developing countries, especially those in sub-Saharan Africa, in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The ACF is organized by the Nairobi Framework partners, including the UNFCCC, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) along with the UNEP DTU Partnership (UDP), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The Forum will bring together climate change focal points, project developers and policymakers, as well as representatives from financial institutions, CDM Designated National Authorities (DNAs), the private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), multilateral agencies, the media and other stakeholders.

When considering some of the key features of the Paris Agreement that was adopted by the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, in December 2015, it is striking how well-suited the UNFCCC's existing national adaptation framework, described in Part I of this Policy Update, is to serving the Paris Agreement. Among these features are a global adaptation goal and the bottom-up, country-driven and forward-looking nature of contributions.

January-February 2016 Transparency Update [viewed]

UNFCCC29 February 2016: A number of reports have been published by the UNFCCC Secretariat in accordance with the current transparency system of the UNFCCC. These include a status report on Japan's annual greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, two multilateral assessment (MA) summary reports, and eight summary reports on the technical analysis of the first Biennial Update Reports (BURs). In addition, several events took place, including a review period focused on Annex I Parties' Kyoto Protocol compliance and a meeting and workshop focused on capacity building for non-Annex I Parties' reporting.

UNCCD Announces WDCD Slogan, Highlights Links to Climate Action [viewed]

???????????????????????23 February 2016: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has announced that the slogan for the 2016 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD), which is celebrated on 17 June, will be ‘Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People.' UNCCD Executive Secretary Monique Barbut thanked China for offering to host the global observance event at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, highlighting the country's experience in “nursing degraded lands and man-made deserts back to health.”

Event: World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) 2016 [viewed]

This year's World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) will take place under the slogan 'Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People'. The global observance event will take place in Beijing, China, and will be hosted by the State Forestry Administration of China. The event will showcase China's new development strategy, 'The Belt and Road,' which aims to strengthen cooperation to combat desertification and land degradation, primarily in Eurasia. During the celebrations, China will launch the 'One Belt and One Road Joint Action to Combating Desertification Initiative' together with interested countries and stakeholders. WDCD 2016 activities will also seek to demonstrate how the target of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) can be a critical element for achieving other sustainable development as well as climate goals.
