COP 15 Chair Briefs the Press on Prospects for Reaching a Global Agreement [viewed]

6 May 2009: In a press conference held at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on prospects for reaching a new global climate change agreement, Connie Hedegaard, Minister for Climate and Energy of Denmark, explained that she aimed to engage in dialogue with Heads of mission at the UN and with the UN Secretary-General on the importance of tackling the “crunch issues” of climate change, namely financing for adaptation and mitigation strategies.

UNFCCC Posts US Submission to AWG-LCA 6 [viewed]

© UNFCCC5 May 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the US Input to the Negotiating Text for Consideration at the Sixth Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 6), in which it supports a Copenhagen agreed outcome that “reflects both common and differentiated elements, is pragmatic, and recognizes the diversity of countries' circumstances and opportunities,” and expresses its commitment to reaching a strong international agreement in Copenhagen. The submission contains sections on mitigation, adaptation, technology and financing.

Report from 24th Meeting of CDM Afforestation and Reforestation Working Group Released [viewed]

© UNFCCC6 May 2009: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Afforestation and Reforestation (A/R) Working Group has released the report of its 24th meeting, held from 29 April-1 May 2009 in Bonn, Germany. During the meeting, the Working Group considered, inter alia, requests for clarification of the application of approved baseline and monitoring methodologies, and draft new small-scale methodologies for A/R CDM project activities.

CBD Secretariat's April Bulletin of Activities Highlights Biodiversity and Climate Change Issues [viewed]

© CBD5 May 2009: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued its monthly Bulletin of Activities for April 2009. Among others, the Bulletin highlights the outcomes of the meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on biodiversity and climate change, held from 18-22 April 2009, in Helsinki, Finland and a new publication on “Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Knowledge related to Biological Diversity and Responses to Climate Change in the Arctic Region.”

Federated States of Micronesia and Mauritius Propose Climate-Related Amendment to Montreal Protocol [viewed]

3 May 2009: A joint proposal has been submitted by the Federated States of Micronesia and Mauritius to amend the Montreal Protocol. The amendment proposes to regulate and phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with a high global warming potential and promote the destruction of banks of ozone-depleting substances (ODS).

These meetings will include the 30th sessions of the Subsidiary Bodies of the UNFCCC – the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) – the eighth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 8), and sixth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 6).

UNPFII to Consider Climate Change Policies and Projects' Adherence to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples' Standards [viewed]

© UNPFIIMay 2009: During its eighth session, scheduled to convene from 18-29 May 2009, at the UN Headquarters in New York, US, the UN Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) will consider a concept note on the extent to which climate change policies and projects adhere to the standards set forth in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Forum will also consider the response from the UNFCCC Secretariat regarding two recommendations on indigenous peoples and climate change adopted during the seventh session of the UNPFII (E/C.19/2008/13), which was held from 21 April-2 May 2008.

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases UK's GHG Inventory [viewed]

© UNFCCC30 April 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report of the individual review of the 2007 and 2008 greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory submissions of the UK (FCCC/ARR/2008/GBR). The expert review team (ERT) finds the inventory to be generally in line with the Revised 1996 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines, the IPCC good practice guidance and the IPCC good practice guidance for land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF).
