UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer said a sectoral approach to reducing
emissions would have a “clear environmental benefit.”
16 September 2008: On the occasion of the International Day
for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of
the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), noted the success that the
Montreal Protocol has achieved through international cooperation.
14 September 2008: Speaking at the Sixteenth Environment
Congress for Asia and the Pacific, which took place in Nagoya, Japan, from
13-14 September 2008, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD), underscored the unprecedented rate of biodiversity
loss due to the pressures on the planet's natural functions caused by human
activity.
11 September 2008: Ahmed Djoghlaf, Convention on Biological
Diversity (CBD) Executive Secretary, has announced that the first meeting of
the CBD Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Biodiversity and Climate
Change will convene from 17-21 November 2008, in London, UK.
The fifth Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is organized by the CBD Secretariat. The meeting is expected to adopt rules and procedures on liability and redress in the context of Article 27 of the Protocol.
15 September 2008: The Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) is
holding its third meeting from 15-18 September 2008, at the United Nations
Campus in Bonn, Germany. At its second meeting in June, the Board adopted a
Work Plan for 2008, Legal Arrangements for the Adaptation Fund (AF)
Secretariat, an outline for Operational Policies and Guidelines for Parties to
Access Resources from the AF, and Roles and Responsibilities of Implementing
and Executing Entities.
9 September 2008: In a lecture given at the Korea Green
Foundation, in Seoul, Republic of Korea, Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, provided an overview of climate change science and the state-of-play of negotiations under the Bali
Road Map. Noting that the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol will
end in 2012 and that science predicts warming will happen faster than
previously thought, he called for international action to combat climate change
to be “stepped up significantly.”
4 September 2008: The Senegalese Agency for Rural
Electrification (ASER) and the World Bank have entered into an agreement for
the provision of 1.5 million compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to Senegal's
rural areas. The project will be carried out as a Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM) programme of activities, and is Senegal's first CDM project.
3 September 2008: A new World Bank report estimates that Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in sub-Saharan Africa could potentially amount to 740 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
3 September 2008: In an address to the Africa Carbon Forum, currently taking place in Dakar, Senegal, until 5 September 2008, Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary noted that, despite being the hardest hit by climate change, Africa is the continent that has benefited the least from the current international climate change regime, including the Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM).
