19 November 2008: In a speech to the African Conference of
Ministers in Charge of Environment on Climate Change for Post-2012, which
convened in Algiers, Algeria, from 19-20 November 2008, UNFCCC Executive
Secretary Yvo de Boer said an agreed outcome at Copenhagen must be more
Africa-friendly and spur enabling support for the continent.
19 November 2008: Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the
UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) addressed the African
Conference of Ministers in Charge of Environment on Climate Change for
Post-2012, and underscored the urgency of incorporating land and soil into the
climate change dialogue.
19 November 2008: Speaking at the Governors' Global Climate Summit, taking place from 18-19 November 2008, in Los Angeles, California, US, UNFCCC Deputy Executive Secretary Richard Kinley highlighted that practical state-level action can be an important step towards a low-emissions global economy.
17 November 2008: Addressing the first meeting of the Ad Hoc
Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Biodiversity and Climate Change of the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is meeting from 17-21 November
2008, in London, UK, CBD Executive Secretary Ahmed Djoghlaf recalled that the
Group's objective is to provide biodiversity-relevant information to the UNFCCC
through the provision of scientific and technical advice and assessment on the
integration of the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity into
climate change mitigation and adaptation activities.
17 November 2008: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has
released the reports from recent meetings of its Methodology Panel,
Afforestation and Reforestation (A/R) Working Group, and Small Scale Working
Group (SSC WG).
14 November 2008: The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) Ad Hoc
Expert Group on Finance convened in Vienna, Austria, from 10-14 November 2008,
to develop proposals for the development of a voluntary global financial
mechanism/portfolio approach/forest financing framework to support: the
implementation of sustainable forest management (SFM); the achievement of the
global objectives on forests; and the implementation of the non-legally binding
instrument on all types of forests.
17 November 2008: The UN Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat issued its report on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
in industrialized countries, which finds that emissions in these countries
continue to rise.
14 November 2008: The first Special Session of the Committee
on Science and Technology (CST S-1) and the seventh session of the Committee
for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 7) of the UN
Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) convened in Istanbul, Turkey, from
3-14 November 2008.
12 November 2008: The proposed annotated agenda for the 44th
meeting of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board has been
released.
12 November 2008: In
an address to the Global Indigenous Peoples Consultation on Reducing Emissions
from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), taking place from 12-14
November 2008, in Baguio City, the Philippines, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted the opportunity for indigenous and
local communities to contribute to the formation and implementation of possible
solutions to climate change, such as REDD schemes, to ensure that their
traditional knowledge, rights and biological diversity are protected and
enhanced in the process.
