27 November 2012: The UN University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) has released a report on climate-induced loss and damage, based on case studies from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Gambia, Kenya and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The study found that all five countries have suffered climate-induced loss and damage, despite implementing adaptation and coping measures.

27 November 2012: The World Economic Forum (WEF) and UNFCCC Secretariat have announced an initiative to showcase successful public-private financing mechanisms and approaches to supporting climate change adaption and mitigation activities. The initiative, called “Momentum for Change: Innovative Financing for Climate-friendly Investment,” will inform governments, investors, business, public finance agencies and the media about opportunities to leverage innovative finance for sustainable growth.

As delegates from around the world gather in Doha for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 18/CMP 8), they will have to tackle significant political issues that remain to be resolved in the UNFCCC negotiation process. However, I hope they also keep in mind that action on the ground to address climate change is already taking place and we need to do a better job at recognizing such activities.
