UNFCCC2 December 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Argentina, the Bahamas, Cambodia, Chile, Iceland, New Zealand, Rwanda, and Sri Lanka have accepted the Doha Amendment, which formalizes commitments for the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol (2013-2020). These announcements bring the total number of Parties that have deposited their instruments of acceptance to 57.

Policy Update #25: Balancing Urgency and Integrity in Climate Finance: The Green Climate Fund's Daunting Task [viewed]

November 2015 began with an historic meeting of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), where the Board of this new international financial institution (IFI) approved the funding for its very first projects and programmes, totaling US$168 million and allocating an additional US$195 million over time. November ended with the first day of negotiations at the much anticipated Paris Climate Change Conference, where finance for mitigation and adaptation is expected to be a contentious issue as governments work toward a new global climate agreement. Climate finance has been named one of the pillars underlying a successful outcome in Paris by the French Presidency of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC.

LPAA Agriculture Event Showcases Initiatives on Soils, Livestock, Food Waste and Production [viewed]

lpaa1 December 2015: A half-day event on agriculture took place under the Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA) and as part of the Paris Climate Change Conference, presenting six cooperative initiatives to drive the growth of climate-resilient, productive and low-emissions agriculture. As the UNFCCC notes, agriculture is one of the sectors most seriously affected by extreme climate, but it also accounts for 24% of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that cause climate change.

UN Secretary-General Launches Climate Resilience Initiative [viewed]

cop2130 November 2015: At the opening of the Paris Climate Change Conference, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the launch of an initiative to build the resilience of the world's most vulnerable populations against impacts of climate change and natural disasters. Led by the Ban in collaboration with 13 UN entities, the initiative will enhance vulnerable populations' capacities to anticipate hazards, absorb shocks and reshape development to reduce risks.

Climate Action and UNEP Launch Climate Action Publication 2015-2016 [viewed]

climate_action30 November 2015: Introducing the ninth edition of the 'Climate Action Publication,' UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner indicates that it shows how various elements can fit together to deliver lasting, meaningful change through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the “Paris climate deal.” Steiner's foreword to the publication notes that the integration of environmental sustainability, social equity and economic progress in the 2030 Agenda “is galvanizing momentum for a strong, universal climate agreement.” The publication was produced for the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC.

Initiatives Announced to Double Clean Energy Research and Development [viewed]

cop2130 November 2015: Twenty major economies launched an initiative to double their investments in clean energy research and development (R&D), while a group of private major investors announced a coalition pledged to invest in early-stage development of technology coming out of the aforementioned initiative. Both were formally announced at the opening of the Paris Climate Change Conference.
