OEWG 37 Discusses Challenges for HFC Amendment [viewed]

oewg378April 2016: The 37th meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG 37) of the parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer discussed challenges involved with adopting a Protocol amendment regarding hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The Group reached agreement on compromise draft text for a formal exemption for high-ambient temperature (HAT) countries, and a linked deferral procedure, but suspended the session without completion of other matters, including on financing.

Event: Resumed OEWG 37, OEWG 38 and ExMOP 3 to the Montreal Protocol [viewed]

The resumed 37th Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG 37) of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer will be held from 15-16 July 2016, followed by OEWG 38 from 18-21 July 2016, followed by the Third Extraordinary Meeting of the Parties (ExMOP 3) from 22-23 July. These meetings are expected to focus on efforts to conclude a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) Amendment to the Protocol in 2016.

The 37th Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (OEWG 37) will focus on the Dubai Pathway on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which is intended to lead to adoption of an HFC Amendment to the Protocol at the 28th Meeting of the Parties (MOP 28) in October 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda.

Event: 28th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol [viewed]

The 28th Meeting of the Parties (MOP 28) to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer is scheduled to consider, inter alia, negotiations on a hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) amendment, nominations for critical-use and essential-use exemptions, and other draft decisions forwarded from the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG). The meeting will be preceded by the resumed OEWG-38 session, which will take place on 8 October.

Montreal Protocol Parties Set Roadmap for HFC Amendment [viewed]

Delegates huddle outside the plenary room on the last day of MOP 278 November 2015: The 27th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 27) adopted decisions on essential-use exemptions (EUEs) and critical-use exemptions (CUEs), and a Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) report on alternatives to ozone depleting substances (ODS), among other substantive and procedural decisions. Following protracted negotiations, Parties also agreed to a road map for negotiating an amendment on the feasibility and ways of managing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

Bangladesh, Seychelles, Georgia, Belarus, South Africa, Moldova Flags25 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Bangladesh, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Seychelles and South Africa have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties to have done so to 79. In addition, the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV (Measurement, Reporting and Verification) completed a training workshop on INDCs for African anglophone and lusophone countries.

Comoros, Grenada and Equatorial Guinea Submit INDCs [viewed]

comoros_grenada_equatorial21 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Comoros, Grenada and Equatorial Guinea have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties to have done so to 65. All three INDCs address both mitigation and adaptation.

Ozone Day Celebrates '30 Years of Healing Ozone Together' [viewed]

ozone_together16 September 2015: The UN system celebrated the International Ozone Day under the theme '30 Years of Healing Ozone Together,' celebrating the 1985 signing of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. The Vienna Convention is the framework agreement under which the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was adopted.

Event: International Ozone Day 2015 [viewed]

International Ozone Day is the annual event that commemorates the date of the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This year's theme, "30 Years of Healing Ozone Together," is a special commemoration of the 1985 signing of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, the framework agreement which the Montreal Protocol complements. The Ozone Secretariat will conduct a "Precious Ozone" digital campaign emphasizing the successes achieved under the ozone protection regime and highlighting the importance of protecting life on Earth from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. Campaign tools will include special posters, logos and banners, animations and internet tools designed to help everyone, from children to policymakers, understand the issues related to protection of the ozone layer.
