9 February 2009: The latest issue of the International Tropical Timber Organization's (ITTO) newsletter on the conservation and sustainable use of tropical forest resources, Tropical Forest Update, focuses on climate change and tropical forests.
6 January 2009: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has made available its Action Plan 2008-2011, adopted by the International Tropical Timber Council at its 44th Session, held in November 2008. The Action Plan elaborates a strategy for advancing ITTO's objectives, and as such, provides guidance on the Organization's overall direction in terms of both policy initiatives and project activities.
8 November 2008: Participants to the 44th session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC), which was held in Yokohama, Japan, from 3-8 November 2008, discussed developments under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) regarding forests and their potential implications for tropical forests and the world tropical timber economy, but did not adopt a decision on this agenda item.
7 November 2008: At the 44th session of the International
Tropical Timber Council and the Associated Sessions of the four Committees
(Finance and Administration, Economic Information and Market Intelligence,
Forest Industry, and Reforestation and Forest Management), the European
Commission (EC) announced a communication on deforestation and climate change,
with the goal of informing the EU position at the upcoming climate change
negotiations in Poznan, Poland.
17 October 2008: The Asia Pacific Regional Forum on Promoting Wood-Based Bioenergy Using Wood Residues and Waste, which was held from 14-17 October 2008, in Jakarta, Indonesia, was organized by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO).
August 2008: The International Tropical Timber Organization
(ITTO) is organizing, with the support of the Government of Korea through the
Seoul National University, an Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop on Afforestation
and Reforestation Projects Development under the Clean Development Mechanism
(AR-CDM), which will be held from 8-12 September 2008, in Seoul, Korea.
4 August 2008: The latest issue of Tropical Timber Market
Report, a publication of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO),
provides an overview of carbon markets and reducing emissions from
deforestation and degradation (REDD). In addition to highlighting
climate-related forest experiences in several ITTO producer and consumer
countries, this issue discusses the potential contribution of the carbon market
to offsetting carbon emissions and how forest-related activities could
potentially be included in a post-2012 climate regime.
2 May 2008: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) held an international expert meeting on the role of sustainable management of tropical forests in climate change adaptation and mitigation from 30 April- 2 May 2008, in Yokohama, Japan. Participants reviewed the potential of sustainable forest management to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, explored existing and possible future schemes to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD) and other mitigation options in the forest sector, and made recommendations for future action.
The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) will convene an International Expert Meeting from 30 April-2 May in Yokohama, Japan, to promote the role of tropical forests and their sustainable management in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
