Event: Seminar on Climate Change and Forests: Conservation of Tropical Forests towards the Green Economy [viewed]

The Forestry and Forestry Products Research Institute (FFPRI) is organizing a two-day seminar on REDD+. Topics will include partnerships with the private sector, robust MRV systems, safeguards, and scaling up of REDD+ activities from the project level to the national level. The first day will host a participatory discussion of private sector investors, the general public and students. The second day will center on technical issues for the benefit of experts, government officials, researchers and students. Waseda University Environmental Research Institute, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) are co-organizing the event.

ITTC Approves New Strategic Plan for ITTO, US$9 Million in Funding [viewed]

10 November 2012: The International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) convened its 48th session from 5-10 November 2012, in Yokohama, Japan. The Council announced funding of US$9 million for sustainable forest management and to support trade of sustainably harvested tropical forest resources.

ITTO Releases Report and Work Plan on Wood Product Accounting and Climate Change [viewed]

28 August 2012: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has released two outputs from its Thematic Programme on Trade and Market Transparency related to accounting for climate change mitigation projects, namely a report titled "Wood product accounting and climate change mitigation projects involving tropical timber," and a work plan titled "Work plan for accounting methodology development for wood products in climate change mitigation projects involving tropical timber."

Event: First IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress [viewed]

The Congress will provide a platform for African forest scientists, forest managers and policy makers and their colleagues from other parts of the world to share and exchange information and experiences on critical issues affecting forest and wildlife resources in Africa. The overall goal of the congress is to demonstrate how forest science is impacting on livelihoods, environmental management and development in Africa. The Congress will highlight research that puts relevant information in the hands of forest communities, forest managers, policy makers, the private sector and civil society. Specific themes to be covered will include: Forests and Climate Change; Forests and Water; Forest Policy, Governance and Trade; Forest Biodiversity and Conservation; and Agroforestry, Energy and Food Security. IUFRO is the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations. FORNESSA is the Forestry Research Network of Sub-Saharan Africa, which is supported by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). The conference is in part supported by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

ITTA, 2006 Enters into Force [viewed]

12 December 2011: The International Tropical Timber Agreement (ITTA), 2006 entered into force on 12 December 2011 with the ratification of the agreement by the Government of Benin. ITTA, 2006 takes the place of its predecessor agreement, ITTA, 1994.
