CMS Executive Secretary Appointed UNEP DEPI Deputy Director [viewed]
5 January 2012: Elizabeth Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), was appointed Deputy Director of the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), as of 9 January 2012. Mrema announced her decision to step down as Executive Secretary at the 38th meeting of the CMS Standing Committee and the most recent Conference of the Parties to the CMS (COP 10).
25 November 2011: The 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) adopted 27 resolutions, including on: synergies and partnerships; the future shape of the CMS; budget; enhanced engagement with the Global Environment Facility (GEF); and climate change and migratory species.
16 June 2011: At a Technical Workshop convened by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), experts agreed on recommendations regarding how the international community can assist migratory species in the context of climate change.
14 June 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), together with 17 multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), has launched a new webportal, titled "InforMEA," that draws information from the MEAs' individual websites to permit a user to search for information related to decisions and resolutions, news and events, meeting calendars, and national focal points across all of the participating MEAs.
15 December 2010: The Convention on Migratory Species of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP/CMS), in collaboration with BirdLife International and Asociación Guyra Paraguay, have adopted an action plan to ensure the conservation of migratory grassland birds and their habitats in South America.
November 2010: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has released its annual report of activities for 2009, which covers activities related to climate change and biodiversity, among others.
24 June 2010: According to the preliminary findings of research undertaken by the Zoological Society of London for the UN Environment Programme's Convention on Migratory Species (UNEP/CMS), species such as turtles and whales are exceptionally vulnerable to climate change.
2 December 2009: Ahmed Djoghlaf, Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Executive Secretary, has underlined the potential synergies among the Rio Conventions, noting that discussions on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) will be an important part of the Copenhagen climate change negotiations.
