WED 2014 Spotlights SIDS [viewed]

worlddayunep5 June 2014: This year's World Environment Day (WED), hosted by Barbados and celebrated under the banner ‘Raise your Voice, Not the Sea Level', focused on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and the risks and opportunities they face, particularly with respect to climate change. The Day lent an additional focus to the 2014 International Year of SIDS, as well as the Third International Conference on the Small Island Developing States, which will convene in Samoa from 1-4 September 2014.

CMS Parties Discuss Programme of Work on Climate Change and Migratory Species [viewed]

CMS14 April 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has reported on a workshop at which national representatives and experts on climate change discussed a Programme of Work for CMS member States on combating the effects of climate change on migratory animals.

Event: Towards a CMS Programme of Work on Climate Change [viewed]

This workshop will be convened by the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Conference of the Parties (COP) appointed Councilor for Climate Change, Colin Galbraith, in collaboration with the CMS Secretariat and Costa Rica's Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications (MINAET), and with the support of Germany and Monaco. The goal of the workshop, pursuant to CMS COP Resolution 10.19, is to prepare a CMS Programme of Work on climate change and migratory species, through opportunities to share experiences and best practices, with regards to the impact of climate change on migratory species. The workshop will also assist Parties in developing national guidelines on measures to assist migratory species to adapt to climate change. The results of the workshop will be delivered to the Scientific Council and the eleventh meeting of the CMS COP (CMS COP11), as well as to the relevant bodies of other institutions including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). National Focal Points (NFPs) are invited to nominate an expert on climate change to participate in this workshop, by 1 March 2014.

Event: CMS COP 11 [viewed]

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

CMS Executive Secretary Appointed UNEP DEPI Deputy Director [viewed]

5 January 2012: Elizabeth Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), was appointed Deputy Director of the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), as of 9 January 2012. Mrema announced her decision to step down as Executive Secretary at the 38th meeting of the CMS Standing Committee and the most recent Conference of the Parties to the CMS (COP 10).

CMS COP 10 Agrees to List Additional Species, Sends Climate Change Message to Durban [viewed]

The dais during CMS COP-1025 November 2011: The 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) adopted 27 resolutions, including on: synergies and partnerships; the future shape of the CMS; budget; enhanced engagement with the Global Environment Facility (GEF); and climate change and migratory species.

UNEP, MEAs Launch InforMEA Webportal [viewed]

14 June 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), together with 17 multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), has launched a new webportal, titled "InforMEA," that draws information from the MEAs' individual websites to permit a user to search for information related to decisions and resolutions, news and events, meeting calendars, and national focal points across all of the participating MEAs.

Event: MEA Information and Knowledge Management Initiative Steering Committee Meeting [viewed]

This meeting is organized by the UN Environment Programme, with the participation of representatives from many multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs). The new webportal "InforMEA" will be launched during the meeting, among other agenda items.
