Report of 11th Meeting of Rio Conventions Joint Liaison Group Released [viewed]

2 August 2011: The Joint Liaison Group (JLG) of the three Rio Conventions - the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - held its 11th meeting, and agreed that terms of reference should be developed to outline the overarching principles of the JLG's operation and further define its modus operandi. Event: CBD Expert Meeting on Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity [viewed]

The CBD Expert Meeting to Develop a Series of Joint Expert Review Processes to Monitor and Assess the Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity aims to: identify gaps and barriers in existing monitoring and scientific assessment of those impacts, in terms of their linkages to relevant global policy processes; develop options for addressing identified gaps and barriers, including a proposal for the development of a series of joint expert review processes; and identify necessary collaboration activities to implement possible options for addressing identified gaps and barriers.

Finland Contributes to Rio Conventions' Gender Mainstreaming Efforts [viewed]

4 July 2011: Finland has announced that it will contribute EUR250,000 to the Special Voluntary Trust Fund of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to support implementation of the CBD Gender Plan of Action and activities to mainstream gender in the three Rio Conventions and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Event: Liaison Group on Climate-related Geo-engineering as it Relates to the CBD [viewed]

The liaison group is tasked with: developing proposals on definitions for climate-related geo-engineering; informing parties of the known and expected impacts (positive, negative and neutral) of geo-engineering on biodiversity and associated social, economic and cultural considerations; and providing advice to parties on assessing the potential and unknown impacts of geo-engineering on biodiversity and associated social, economic and cultural considerations. The Liaison Group will produce a document for consideration by SBSTTA at its 16th meeting.
