5 May 2012: The 16th session of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted 15 recommendations, including two packages of recommendations on marine and coastal biodiversity, and biodiversity and climate change. It also addressed the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and in-depth review of the work programme on island biodiversity (PoWIB), inter alia.

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop aims to build capacity to: create national action plans for implementation of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas; access funding based on these action plans; and strengthen implementation of the programme of work on the themes of governance, climate change, and valuation of the costs and benefits of protected areas, with a focus on marine protected areas (MPAs) where applicable.

The Rio Conventions Pavilion at Rio+20 is a collaborative outreach activity of the Secretariats of the Rio Conventions (UNFCCC, UNCCD and CBD), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and 25 other international, national and local partners. It aims to promote and strengthen synergies between the Rio Conventions at implementation levels by providing a coordinated platform for awareness-raising and information-sharing about the linkages in science, policy and practice between biodiversity, climate change and combating desertification/land degradation.
