Programme's (UNEP) Executive Director, Achim Steiner, has become the official
patron of Flocke, a polar bear cub in Germany's Nuremberg zoo. At the recent ninth Conference of Parties
to Convention on Biological Diversity, which convened in Bonn, Germany, Steiner
said, “I hope a global green economy can be implemented in [Flocke's] lifetime.

June 2008: During World Environment Day celebrations in Montreal, Canada, the
Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Ahmed
Djoghlaf, stressed that biodiversity is “part and parcel of any viable
long-term response to addressing the climate-change challenges facing mankind”
and that the effective and coordinated implementation of the three Rio
conventions is the new multilateral response for achieving lasting peace,
shared prosperity and sustainable future.

June 2008: In a message to the High-Level Conference on World Food Security
(3-5 June 2008, Rome, Italy), Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), underlined the current loss of
agricultural and livestock biodiversity, which he said is further increased by
climate change.

May 2008: The ninth Conference of the Parties (COP 9) to the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD) was held from 19-30 May 2008, in Bonn, Germany. The
COP addressed a range of issues related to climate change, including ocean

22 May 2008: On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD), which was observed on 22 May 2008, UN and UNEP dignitaries stressed the nexus between biological diversity, food supply and climate change.
23 May 2008: Delegates to the ninth session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, meeting in Bonn, Germany, considered the CBD's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological (SBSTTA) recommendations on biodiversity and climate change (recommendations XII/5 and XIII/6) on Friday, 23 May 2008. 20 May: At a side event held during the ninth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, in Bonn, Germany, the European Commission presented its Natura 2000 network of conservation areas established to protect natural habitats.

24 April 2008: According to a new book, a new generation of medical treatments may be lost unless the current rate of biodiversity loss is reversed. The book, Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity, was supported by UNEP, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the UN Development Programme and IUCN, and was edited and written by Eric Chivian and Aaron Bernstein, from Harvard Medical School, along with more than 100 contributing scientists.
Speaking at the International Civil Society Forum “100 Days to the UN Biodiversity Conference,” CBD Executive Secretary Ahmed Djoghlaf said biodiversity faces a “tremendous challenge, compounded by climate change.
The Joint Liaison Group of the three Rio Conventions (the Convention on Biological Diversity, Convention on Climate Change, and Convention to Combat Desertification) has issued an information brochure on the important contribution of forests to the achievement of their respective goals and objectives.
