28 November 2008: The first meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Biodiversity and Climate Change of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), including experts from 14 different countries, convened from 17-21 November 2008, in London, UK. The discussions focused on two main themes: the impacts of climate change on biodiversity; and biodiversity and climate change mitigation.
20 November 2008: Organized by Tebtebba (Indigenous Peoples' International Centre for Policy Research and Education), the UN University (UNU) Institute of Advanced Studies Traditional Knowledge Initiative, the UN REDD Programme and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat, the Global Indigenous Peoples Consultation on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) was held from 12-14 November 2008, in Baguio City, the Philippines. Participants adopted a global indigenous peoples strategy on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
17 November 2008: Addressing the first meeting of the Ad Hoc
Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Biodiversity and Climate Change of the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is meeting from 17-21 November
2008, in London, UK, CBD Executive Secretary Ahmed Djoghlaf recalled that the
Group's objective is to provide biodiversity-relevant information to the UNFCCC
through the provision of scientific and technical advice and assessment on the
integration of the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity into
climate change mitigation and adaptation activities.
12 November 2008: In
an address to the Global Indigenous Peoples Consultation on Reducing Emissions
from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), taking place from 12-14
November 2008, in Baguio City, the Philippines, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted the opportunity for indigenous and
local communities to contribute to the formation and implementation of possible
solutions to climate change, such as REDD schemes, to ensure that their
traditional knowledge, rights and biological diversity are protected and
enhanced in the process.
17 October 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the UN University's
Traditional Knowledge Initiative and Tebtebba, has announced the beneficiaries
of financial assistance for participation in the Global Indigenous Peoples'
Consultation on Potential Impacts of “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and
Forest Degradation (REDD)” on Indigenous and Local Communities (12-14 November
2008, Baguio City, Philippines).
16 October 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is launching a bi-monthly e-newsletter to inform CBD National Focal Points and other interested recipients about biodiversity aspects in relation to “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation” (REDD).
15 October 2008: In his message on the occasion of World Food Day, celebrated on 16 October 2008, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), stressed that “biodiversity, the foundation of all crops and domesticated livestock and the variety within them, is the basis for providing stability to agriculture.”
6 October 2008: The list of experts for the first meeting of
the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on biodiversity and climate change of
the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has been approved by the Bureau of
the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice and
the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties.
6 October 2008: Top UN officials marked World Habitat Day by
drawing attention to the need to raise awareness of the problems of rapid
urbanization, its impact on the environment and the challenges of rising urban
poverty. The UN has designated the first Monday in October each year as World
Habitat Day, to reflect on the state of towns and cities and the basic right to
adequate shelter for all. This year, Luanda, Angola, led the observance of the
celebration, which focused on the theme “Harmonious Cities.”
3 October 2008: In accordance with Decision IX/1 of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the
CBD Secretariat has invited parties, other governments and relevant
organizations to supply information on various aspects of agricultural
biodiversity conservation, including lessons learned about the conservation and
sustainable use of agricultural biodiversity, for consideration in climate
change adaptation and mitigation planning and cross-sectoral planning in
agricultural areas.
