28 May 2010: The fourth Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) was held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, on 25-26 May 2010. The Assembly was preceded by a Civil Society Forum and a GEF Council meeting, which took place at the same venue.
26 May 2010: The UN-REDD Programme has released its May 2010 Newsletter, which highlights many recent activities and publications on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+).
21 May 2010: The 14th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 14) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) convened from 10-21 May 2010, in Nairobi, Kenya. SBSTTA 14 adopted 18 recommendations to be considered by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the CBD. Climate-related issues are addressed in the recommendations on: mountain biodiversity; inland waters; marine and coastal biodiversity, including ocean fertilization; protected areas; biodiversity and climate change; biofuels and biodiversity; and forest biodiversity.
10 May 2010: The UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) launched the Global Island Database (GID) during the small island developing States (SIDS) Day held during the 18th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) in New York, US, on 10 May 2010. The GID reflects five of the themes important for islands, as identified by the Island Biodiversity Programme of Work (IBPoW) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), namely biodiversity, climate change, invasive species, pollution and sustainability.
13 May 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in consultation with the Secretariats of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the UNFCCC, will convene a Rio Conventions Ecosystems and Climate Change Pavilion at the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the CBD, to be held from 18-29 October 2010, in Nagoya, Japan. The Pavilion will also be held during the 16th session of the COP to the UNFCCC, at the end of 2011 in Cancun, Mexico, and the 10th session of the COP to the UNCCD, scheduled to take place in 2011 in the Republic of Korea. This initiative will also be extended to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), which will take place in Brazil in 2012.
13 May 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has published the April issue of its Monthly Bulletin of Activities, which includes a report on the recently held workshop on regional action to combat invasive species on islands to preserve biodiversity and adapt to climate change.
10 May 2010: The third edition of Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-3), a major assessment of the current state of biodiversity and the implications of its continued loss for human well-being, has been launched. The report notes that the linked challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change must be addressed with equal priority and in close coordination, if the most severe impacts of each are to be avoided.
26 April 2010: The latest issue of “Climate Frontlines,” a global forum on the internet for indigenous peoples, small islands and vulnerable communities sponsored by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), features an article on the growing role of climate change in accelerating desertification and accentuating winter conditions for herding communities.
23 April 2010:The People's World Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth convened in Cochabamba, Bolivia, from 19-22 April 2010. An initiative of Bolivian President Evo Morales, the Conference provided a forum to discuss the structural and systemic causes of climate change and propose substantive measures that facilitate the well-being of mankind in harmony with nature.
22 April 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has published its ninth volume of the "REDD-plus & Biodiversity e-Newsletter." Aiming to inform CBD national focal points and partners about biodiversity aspects related to reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+), this volume highlights a new collaboration between the CBD and the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), and several projects and publications related to REDD+.
