UN Secretary-General Reports on UN Environmental Conventions Implementation [viewed]

United Nations27 July 2016: The UN Secretary-General has transmitted a report on the 'Implementation of UN Environmental Conventions' (A/71/005 ) to the 71st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). The document includes reports submitted to the Secretary-General by the Secretariats of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The report is one of a number of Secretary-General's reports of the UNGA's 2nd Committee in preparation for the 71st session of the UNGA, which begins in September 2016.

GEF Council Marks 25th Anniversary, Approves Work Program for US$398.68 Million, CBIT Trust Fund [viewed]

gef509 June 2016: The 50th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, which marked the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the GEF, approved a Work Program comprising 38 project concepts and four programmatic frameworks, with total resources amounting to US$398.68 million. In addition, the GEF Council established a new trust fund for the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT), which was created in response to a request by the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, as reflected in the decision adopting the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Events around the world aimed to promote the prevention of plastic pollution in the world's oceans, and highlighted the role of healthy oceans in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 calls to "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development."

Environmental Degradation Leading Cause of Deaths Globally, Says UN Report [viewed]

Healthy Environment - Healthy People23 May 2016: Environmental degradation and pollution cause almost a quarter of all deaths, up to 234 times as many premature deaths as occur in conflicts annually and the deaths of more than 25% of all children under the age of five, according to a UN report released to coincide with the second session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2). The report, titled ‘Healthy Environment, Healthy People,' emphasizes the importance of a healthy environment to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and addresses dangers posed by air pollution, chemicals, climate change and other issues linking environmental quality to health.
