World Bank and Partners Seek Views on Economics of Adaptation Study [viewed]

Economics of Adaptation Study December 2008: The World Bank is working with six pilot countries – Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique and Vietnam– on a US$8 million study funded by the Governments of the UK, the Netherlands and Switzerland to help decision makers in developing countries better understand and assess the risks posed by climate change, and to better cost, prioritize, sequence and integrate adaptation strategies into their development plans and budgets.

Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership

5 December 2008: A meeting of the Global Forum on Flaring Reduction and Natural Gas Utilization convened from 4-5 December 2008, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Led by the World Bank, the Global Gas Flaring Reduction partnership (GGFR) found evidence of a decline in global gas flaring, while calling for oil producing countries and companies to keep up the momentum and redouble efforts in gas flaring reduction to reduce greenhouse emissions.

UNEP and GEF Announce Completion of Test Geothermal Energy Project in East-Africa [viewed]

 African Rift Geothermal Facility (ARGeo) 9 December 2008: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have announced the completion of the nearly US$1 million Joint Geophysical Imaging project in Kenya. The project tested new seismic and drilling techniques to tap steam from hot underground rocks, and found wells of steam able to generate 4-5 MW of electricity, with one well yielding 8 MW.

Climate Weather Data 6 December 2008: A new report released by the World Bank suggests that forecasting improvements in Europe and Central Asia can play a critical role in improving the economy and mitigating the impacts of disasters in the region. The report “Weather and Climate Services in Europe and Central Asia: A Regional Review” explains why improving weather monitoring systems can help mitigate damaging economic impacts of weather disasters, support increased productivity of agriculture, conserve energy, and promote safe aviation and transport by road and rail.
