SE4All Advisory Board Endorses 'Going Further, Faster' Strategy [viewed]

SE4ALL16 June 2016: The 2030 goals of the UN's Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative are to ensure universal access to modern energy services, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. In order to achieve these goals, the SE4All Advisory Board has endorsed the Strategic Framework for Results 2016-2021: 'Going Further, Faster.'

When the Paris Agreement on climate change was adopted in December 2015, it included a long-term goal for the adaptation to climate change – “enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change, with a view to contributing to sustainable development […]”. It recognised the direct link of climate change adaptation to sustainable development and further highlighted its importance. This added momentum to an increasing need for practical approaches for climate change adaptation, which can range from making transport infrastructure more resilient to storms and floods, to helping small businesses adapt to increasing water scarcity.

icao_arctic_adb_afdb13 June 2016: According to a policy paper from the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, “carbon-intensive companies are not ready for the impact of the Paris Agreement's commitments.” The authors, economists Nicholas Stern and Dimitri Zenghelis, submitted the paper to the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, arguing that the Financial Stability Board (FSB) should create robust reporting guidance on climate risks.

GEF Council Marks 25th Anniversary, Approves Work Program for US$398.68 Million, CBIT Trust Fund [viewed]

gef509 June 2016: The 50th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, which marked the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the GEF, approved a Work Program comprising 38 project concepts and four programmatic frameworks, with total resources amounting to US$398.68 million. In addition, the GEF Council established a new trust fund for the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT), which was created in response to a request by the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, as reflected in the decision adopting the Paris Agreement on climate change.

STAP Reports Advise GEF Council on SLM, Sustainable Agriculture, Project Design and Source-to-Sea Continuum [viewed]

Energy Outlook: Clean Energy Investments, RE Employment Increasing, Cities Unlock Mitigation Potential [viewed]

Other recent developments show that: renewables are currently firmly established as competitive, mainstream sources of energy; energy efficiency (EE) action in urban environments helps cities transition to sustainable energy systems; and employment in renewable energy (RE) is on the rise. Transparency and Compliance Update: UNFCCC National Reporting News Highlighted, Capacity Building Initiative Launched [viewed]

unfccc_gef_mrv1 June 2016: A transparency and compliance regime is vital for building international trust and confidence that action to address climate change is taking place, as well as for assessing how to facilitate further action. In the last month, the UNFCCC Secretariat has released updates regarding national reporting from Parties on their climate change action, including a status report on Switzerland's greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, the status of Biennial Report (BR) submissions and assistance from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to developing countries for their Biennial Update Reports (BURs). In addition, during the Bonn Climate Change Conference, held 16-26 May, 13 developing country Parties presented their experience with preparing BURs, and the GEF updated participants on progress toward establishing and funding the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT).
