July 2014 Water Finance Update [viewed]

World Bank-AfDB-ADB-IDB-EBRD-GEFJuly 2014: The World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) undertook a variety of activities during July. Projects were approved across Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe, addressing issues such as transboundary water management, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, hydropower and climate resilience.

Event: First Ministerial and Policy Conference on Sustainable Transport [viewed]

This conference is part of the Africa Sustainable Transport Forum, a high-level platform for discussion and policy decision making. The Forum aims to integrate sustainable transport into Africa's development and planning processes and increase funding to sustainable transport programmes in Africa, with the broader aim of improving access to transport, reducing air pollution and climate emissions, and improving road safety and health. The Forum also aims to share experiences from demonstration and pilot projects and foster South-South exchanges. The Forum intends to hold Ministerial conferences bi-annually, with Sub-Regional conferences in the interim years. The Forum is a partnership among the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the World Bank. UNEP hosts the Forum Secretariat.

ADB Highlights Flood Control in Transboundary Pyanj River [viewed]

The report aims to support flood control planning and management in the basin and build climate resilience.

World Bank Assesses Climate Resilience of Transboundary Water Treaties [viewed]

World Bank1 June 2014: The World Bank has released a Policy Research Working Paper, titled 'Climate Change, Conflict and Cooperation: Global Analysis of the Resilience of International River Treaties to Increased Water Variability,' which identifies allocation provisions and institutional mechanisms that can mitigate potential conflicts between basin States in the face of increasing water variability caused by climate change.

ADB Workshop Focuses on Transport, Energy NAMAs in Central Asia [viewed]

ADB18 June 2014: Forty policy makers from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan participated in the regional workshop on 'NAMA Readiness and Investment Training for Mitigation Activities in the Energy and Transport Sectors.' Participants learned about the design, implementation and monitoring of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), shared regional NAMA experience and progress, and discussed the financing of NAMA components.

BRICS Launch Development Bank [viewed]

vi-brics-summit16 July 2014: The Sixth BRICS Summit resulted in the establishment of the New Development Bank, which is to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging and developing economies. The Summit also launched a BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), and issued a declaration outlining the five countries' common position on a number of global issues, including climate change and sustainable energy.

WTO Members Launch Talks on Environmental Goods [viewed]
