Event: An Investment Forum: Mobilizing Private Investment in Trees and Landscape Restoration in Africa [viewed]

This event is co-organized by PROFOR, the World Bank, IUCN, Ecoagriculture Partners, Terrafrica and the World Agrofrestry Centre to generate greater interest in agroforestry and other landscape approaches, particularly from the private sector. It aims to illustrate that investing in degraded landscapes holds the promise of a 'triple win' by improving rural livelihoods, increasing resilience in the face of climate extremes, and mitigating climate change.

World Bank Climate Change Envoy Comments on Sea Level Rise Report [viewed]

4 May 2011: Andrew Steer, Special Envoy for Climate Change for the World Bank Group, has expressed concern over the findings of a new report by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP), the scientific arm of the eight-nation Arctic Council. The report predicts that sea level rise will reach between 0.9 and 1.6 meters by the end of this century, with negative effects in particular over poor populations who live in the lowest lying land and have the fewest resources to adapt.

UNDP/GEF Publish Review of Legal and Institutional Frameworks for Transboundary Waters [viewed]

April 2011: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has published a global review of legal and institutional frameworks for 28 transboundary surface water, groundwater and marine water systems covering the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. The report also considers climate change adaptation knowledge in the various water basins analyzed.

World Bank Approves Hydropower Loan for Viet Nam [viewed]

26 April 2011: The World Bank approved a US$330 million loan for Viet Nam to support a 260 Megawatts multipurpose hydropower project that will help meet growing domestic demand for electricity, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and bring flood control and irrigation benefits to rural and poor communities in Thanh Hoa province.

IFC Provides Framework for Climate Change Risk Analysis in Port Infrastructure [viewed]

April 2011: The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has published a comprehensive framework for assessing the risks of climate change on port operations and options for adapting to risks. The report, titled "Climate Risk and Business: Ports," analyzes the climate-related risks and opportunities facing IFC client Terminal Maritimo Muelles el Bosque, a port in Cartagena, Colombia.

Event: Regional Conference on Renewable Energy Development in the Countries of Central Asia and CIS [viewed]

This Conference will review the results and lessons learned by the UN Development Programme (UNDP)/Global Environment Facility (GEF) project on the development of a wind power market in Kazakhstan, including development of a legal framework and state regulation of renewable energy, development of local capacity while implementing wind parks projects, support in developing first projects, results achieved, experience and lessons learned during project implementation. Participants will have an opportunity to share views and experience in the development of renewable energy in Central Asia, and to develop recommendations on policies and cooperation in the field of renewables. The conference is organized by the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies, the Ministry of Environment, the Kazakhstan Electricity Association (KEA) and UNDP Kazakhstan.
