World Bank, Canada Launch Caribbean Climate Innovation Center [viewed]

ccic27 January 2014: A new center has been created with support from the Government of Canada and the World Bank to help small and medium-sized enterprises in the Caribbean region to develop locally-appropriate solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation. One of eight such centers around the world, the Caribbean Climate Innovation Center (CCIC) aims to leverage programmes, activities, financing and its network of partners and stakeholders to solve climate, energy and resource challenges and support economic development through job creation in the region.

Event: Green Growth Knowledge Platform Regional Practitioners' Workshop [viewed]

The Green Growth Knowledge Platform's (GGKP) Workshop on Green Growth in Africa, titled 'Pathways to Green Growth in Africa,' aims to: explore the rationale for green(er) growth in an African context; facilitate policy dialogue and knowledge sharing; and discuss practical implementation issues. The workshop will focus on setting an African green growth vision through thematic sessions and exploring linkages among natural resources management, renewable energy and greening infrastructure. Participants will, inter alia, focus on green growth landscapes in Africa, including a discussion on the specific challenges faced by African countries, such as high dependence on natural resources for growth and rapid infrastructure, and discuss green growth in practice, including discussions on forest-friendly growth in the Congo Basin and parallel sessions designed to facilitate an exchange of ideas and identify areas for collaboration. Also during the workshop, The Program on Forests (PROFOR) will convene sessions, providing a practical introduction for assessing and monitoring forest governance and enhancing climate resilience including through climate change mitigation and adaptation.

World Bank AFDB21 January 2014: The World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) made a number of investments in the water and sanitation sector in January 2014, including in Albania, Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Madagascar, the Russian Federation, Togo and Viet Nam, for projects aimed at improving basic urban services, providing rural access to water supply and sanitation, expanding hydromet systems to monitor hydrological information, and improve the climate resilience of irrigated agriculture and water supply and sanitation services, among others.

World Bank Paper Outlines Options for Low-Carbon Urban Investment in Shanghai [viewed]

World Bank21 January 2014: The World Bank has announced a paper that presents innovative bottom-up approaches to help cities set low-carbon targets and identify cost-effective, low-carbon investments for meeting these targets. The methodology presented in the study, titled 'Applying Abatement Cost Curve Methodology for Low-Carbon Strategy in Changning District, Shanghai,' is designed to be replicable in cities elsewhere in China and around the world.

Event: WCRP Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean: Developing, Linking and Applying Climate Knowledge [viewed]

This conference is being co-organized by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Inter-American Institute (IAI), Argentina's Center for Research on Oceans and Atmosphere, and Uruguay's University of the Republic. The WCRP Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) aims to identify gaps and ways to overcome limitations in the chain of knowledge from basic to applied climate science to informing policy and decisions that are particularly relevant for LAC.
