31 March 2009: In the lead up to the 2 April 2009 G20 Summit, in London, UK, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has stressed the potential role of tourism as an economic stimulus and in the green economy.
30 March 2009: The Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) held a workshop on 30 March 2009, in Washington DC, US, to develop the Panel's scientific and technical guidance for the Fifth GEF Replenishment's (GEF-5) strategic programming on climate mitigation policies and technologies.
27 March 2009: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a project to provide Brazil's Usiminas steel company a loan amounting to US$200 million. The first part of the project will finance investments in a new power cogeneration plant and related equipment to produce electricity using excess heat and gases that originate from the production of the steel, allowing the Belo Horizonte-based company to cut its production costs and reduce carbon emissions.
25 March 2009: The World Bank approved a US$1.3 billion Development Policy Loan to help Brazil attain sustainable development goals linked to economic growth from Amazon sustainable development to climate change, as well as the water sector.
March 2009: The World Bank's Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) has released a report on “Climate Change and the World Bank Group,” which finds, among other issues, that fuel pricing is a key policy affecting emissions and identifies the absence of important information for the design and management of emissions-related policies.
March 2009: The World Bank's Forest Investment Program (FIP), a part of its Climate Investment Framework (CIF), seeks to pilot and demonstrate new approaches to forest management that lead to major impacts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from forests.
23 March 2009: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has announced the Carbon Benefits Project (CBP), implemented by the UN Environment Programme, which aims to provide a solution to the problems related to measuring terrestrial carbon, particularly on complex landscapes.
23 March 2009: The World Bank has launched its annual Global Development Marketplace competition for seed grants.
18 March 2009: Thirty countries met in Paris, France, to discuss the fifth replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-5), with several calling for a substantial increase in the replenishment of the GEF. The First Meeting of Contributing Participants towards GEF-5 gathered prospective donors from developed and developing countries from 17-18 March 2009, to consider, inter alia, innovative sources of funding, including the possibility of obtaining carbon credits for GEF projects that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
March 2009: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with financing from the Government of the Netherlands, has published a Green Investment Scheme (GIS) Manual and Model Agreement.
