Event: GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop for East Africa [viewed]

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for East Africa will bring together GEF focal points, focal points from the main Conventions (Biodiversity, Desertification, Climate Change and persistent organic pollutants), representatives from civil society and representatives from the GEF Secretariat and the GEF Agencies to discuss priority issues and share lessons and experiences from the development and implementation of GEF projects and their integration within national policy frameworks. Countries eligible for this ECW are: Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

Event: Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative [viewed]

This side event to the 3rd World Forest Week will be an opportunity to: present the outcomes and results of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI) African Union (AU) Commission projects supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the EU and the Global Mechanism-UN Convention to Combat Desertification (GM-UNCCD) in 13 countries; and showcase the use of landscape and inter-sectoral approaches and partnerships to support the effective planning and implementation of the GGWSI.

UNEP TNA Releases Guidebook on Climate Change Mitigation in the Agricultural Sector [viewed]

UNEPAugust 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) Project has released a guidebook titled “Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation: Agriculture Sector.” The guidebook describes crop and livestock management technologies and practices that contribute to climate change mitigation while improving crop productivity and reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

Naoko Ishii Takes Office as GEF CEO and Chairperson [viewed]

1 August 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) welcomed Naoko Ishii as its new CEO and Chairperson, announcing that she had taken office on 1 August 2012. The GEF Council unanimously selected Ishii to succeed Monique Barbut, who completed her second term as CEO in July 2012.

PACC Upgrades Water Reserves and Monitoring in Marshall Islands [viewed]

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) will hold an Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for Central Asia, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the Russian Federation as part of the GEF Country Support Programme. The workshop will bring together representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat, and GEF Agencies, as well as focal points from the biodiversity, desertification, climate change, and chemical conventions to explain and discuss GEF support for environment-related activities.

The workshop will bring together representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat and GEF Agencies, with focal points of the biodiversity, desertification, climate change, and chemicals conventions to discuss activities with global environmental benefits. Civil society organizations are invited to register at the meeting website.

The workshop will invite focal points from the biodiversity, desertification, climate change, and chemical conventions to meet with representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat and GEF Agencies. Participants are expected from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
