Event: 19th Meeting of the Major Economies Forum [viewed]

Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will co-chair this meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate. The MEF provides a platform for dialogue and political impetus bringing together the main greenhouse gas emitting countries. The 19th meeting will be co-hosted by the United States. Discussions will focus on issues related to the new global climate change agreement which is set to be adopted at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 21) and 11th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP) to be held in 2015 in Paris. The MEF meeting will be followed immediately by the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, which will gather Ministers from about 35 countries, co-hosted by Germany and Peru, and will serve as a preparatory meeting for COP 20 and CMP 10, which are to take place in Lima, Peru, in December 2014.

Global Commission on Economy and Climate Meets to Finalize Report [viewed]

The New Climate Economy27 June 2014: The Global Commission on the Economy and Climate and its Commissioning Countries met to finalize the New Climate Economy (NCE) report, which will be released in September 2014 in advance of the UN Climate Summit. The report will make recommendations on actions and policies that can achieve economic growth while also addressing climate change.

International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV Discusses INDCs [viewed]

Our Ocean Conference Garners Over $800 Million in Ocean Conservation Commitments [viewed]

our-ocean17 June 2014: US Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the US State Department's 'Our Ocean' conference resulted in more than US$800 million in government and private sector commitments to conserve the ocean and its resources. The conference aimed to develop strategies for protecting oceans through three pillars focused on: sustainable fisheries; marine pollution from land-based and ocean-based sources; and ocean acidification, as addressed in the ‘Our Ocean Action Plan.'

Event: Fifth Petersberg Climate Dialogue [viewed]

The meetings of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, an initiative of the German Government, are co-chaired by Germany and the upcoming Presidency of the UN climate negotiations (Mexico in 2010; South Africa in 2011; Qatar in 2012; Poland in 2013; and Peru in 2014). The Dialogue brings together representatives from all regions of the world and all negotiating groups. Discussions are held in an informal style to facilitate an "open and honest" debate. The fifth Petersberg Climate Dialogue will take place under the theme "Addressing the urgency – stepping up our contributions," and will aim to introduce new ideas into the negotiations and discuss new strategies in preparation for the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, scheduled to take place in Lima, Peru, in December 2014. The meeting will be presided over by Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks and Peruvian Minister for Environment Manuel Pulgar-Vidal.

GLOBE World Summit of Legislators Resolution Urges Climate Action [viewed]

world-summit9 June 2014: Participants at the Second World Summit of Legislators, organized by the Global Legislators Organisation (GLOBE), agreed on a Legislators Resolution encouraging national governments and the UN to take seven main actions, with a focus on strengthening climate change mitigation. The Summit took place on 6-8 June 2014, in Mexico City, Mexico, hosted by the Mexican Congress.

G7 Declaration Highlights Energy Security, Climate Change, Sustainable Development [viewed]

g7-eu5 June 2014: The Presidents of the European Council and European Commission (EC) have gathered with leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US for a G7 Summit, during which they discussed issues related to Ukraine and global foreign policy issues, as well as energy, climate, economy and development, among others. The resulting Brussels G7 Summit Declaration addresses each of these issues and affirms the G7's commitment to “the values of freedom and democracy, and their universality and to fostering peace and security.”

UK Hosts Clean Energy Finance Summit [viewed]

Flag UK4 June 2014: The Clean Energy Finance Summit has held the inaugural meeting of the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance, a global public-private platform created to leverage private sector investments in low-carbon, climate-resilient infrastructure in developing countries. The meeting represented an opportunity for the Global Innovation Lab to consider proposals for raising private finance in consultation with experts from pension funds, investment banks and development finance institutions in developed and developing countries.

Event: G7 Summit [viewed]

The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom (UK), the US, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission (EC) will convene for a G7 Summit from the evening of 4 June through the morning of 5 June 2014. Leaders are expected to discuss: the situation in Ukraine and relations with the Russian Federation; climate change and development; energy security; the global economy; trade; and other foreign policy topics. The 40th meeting of the G8 summit was scheduled to be held in the Russian Federation in June 2014. At their meeting in The Hague, the Netherlands in March 2014, the G7 leaders decided to hold a meeting without the Russian Federation, due to the Crimean crisis.
