World Bank Announces US$5bn for Power Generation in Africa [viewed]

power.africa5 August 2014: The World Bank has committed US$5 billion in technical and financial support for energy projects in six African countries partnering with US President Barack Obama's Power Africa Initiative. The support will consist of direct financing, investment guarantees and advisory services for project preparation, with the aim of creating 2.5 GW in new electricity generation capacity.

Mexico, California Enhance Cooperation on Climate Change [viewed]

california-mexico-flags28 July 2014: The Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and its National Forestry Commission and the State of California, US, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on enhancing cooperation on climate change and the environment. The objective of the MoU is to promote bilateral actions in the areas of climate change, forest wildfires, air quality and clean transport through 2018.

World Bank-AfDB-ADB-IDB-EBRD-GEFJuly 2014: The World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) undertook a variety of activities during July. Projects were approved across Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe, addressing issues such as transboundary water management, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, hydropower and climate resilience.

Event: Social Pre-COP [viewed]

The Social PreCOP will be held from 4-7 November 2014, ahead of UNFCCC COP 20. It will welcome civil society organizations from all over the world, including those attending the UNFCCC negotiations or involved in other UN processes, as well as organizations with no formal UN status. The Social Pre-COP will, inter alia: provide civil society with an opportunity to contribute ideas and proposals for the new climate agreement; ensure that its agenda is aligned with the current themes negotiated under the Convention to enable viable inputs to the formal process; and facilitate regional balance and different perspectives. Petersberg Climate Dialogue Addresses Expectations for Lima [viewed]

german-ministry-logo17 July 2014: The fifth Petersberg Climate Dialogue, which met under the theme 'Addressing the urgency – stepping up our contributions,' aimed to introduce new ideas in the UN climate negotiations and discuss new strategies in preparation for the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference scheduled to take place in Lima, Peru, in December 2014. In her statement to ministers at the event, German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged €750 million to climate change and the initial capitalization of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), noting that this is in addition to the €3.2 billion Germany has already contributed to climate efforts in recent years.
