Event: Second Climate Change Summit of the Americas [viewed]

The Second Climate Change Summit of the Americas is being organized by the Government of Jalisco through the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development of Mexico. It will bring together sub-national governments that make up the American continent with the aim of following up on the new challenges presented by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. Participants will include Governors, Ministers and other dignitaries and representatives from several countries in Latin America and the rest of the world, who will have the opportunity to share their experiences and seek cooperation to implement the agreements reached.

Event: G20 Summit - China 2016 [viewed]

The Group of 20 leaders will convene in Hangzhou, China, to discuss way to enhance international economic cooperation. The theme of the 2016 Summit is China, 'Towards an innovative, invigorated, interconnected and inclusive world economy'. Four Sherpas' Meetings will be held before the Summit for preparation, and one after the Summit on follow-up. In addition, four meetings will be held for Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, and six for finance deputies to move forward the financial agenda. G20 trade, employment, energy and agriculture ministers meetings as well as relevant working groups meetings will also seek to promote cooperation in their respective areas and prepare the deliverables for the Summit.

Climate Vulnerable Forum Inaugurates South-South Centre, Ethiopian Presidency [viewed]

cvf15 August 2016: Addressing the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) for the first time in his capacity as Chair, Shiferaw Teklemariam Menbacho, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change of Ethiopia, stressed that the 43 highly vulnerable member countries of the CVF strive to develop their economies, yet "continue to be faced with serious, devastating and unforeseeable challenges" that hinder progress toward "inclusive and sustainable development."

Event: Climate Vulnerable Forum Leadership Events [viewed]

The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) is an international partnership of countries highly vulnerable to a warming planet. The Forum serves as a South-South cooperation platform for participating governments to act together to deal with global climate change. Leaders and Senior Officials of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) will meet in the Philippines in a series of events concluding the Philippine presidency of the body, which commenced in January 2015. Ethiopia will assume the Forum's Chair on 15 August 2016, at the conclusion of a High Level Policy Forum at the Philippine Senate. Other activities will include: an Inaugural Seminar and Lectures, of the newly-created CVF South-South Centre of excellence for climate information and services to be based in Philippines; and a Seminar, titled “Climate Diplomacy, Leadership and Negotiations,” from 11-14 August 2016, which will focus on enhancing the capacity of the CVF to collaborate and advance the collective agenda of countries highly vulnerable to climate change at international and domestic levels. The High Level Policy Forum will be hosted by the Philippine Senate and the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines. The CVF is made up of 43 member developing countries from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific, and includes various small island developing States (SIDS).

July 2016 Climate Finance Update: Meetings Call for Access, Mobilization, Scaling Up [viewed]

july2016_finance1 August 2016: During the month of July, a number of high-level meetings highlighted the need for enhanced focus on climate finance. Resilience and disaster recovery projects in Asia and Africa received new financing. Climate funds launched calls for readiness and private sector support projects, and a number of entities reported on lessons learned from climate finance in agriculture, forests, gender mainstreaming and regional resilience investment planning.

G20 Finance Ministers Recognize Role of Green Investment for Sustainable Growth [viewed]

g20-201625 July 2016: The Group of 20 (G20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors' July meeting addressed green and climate finance. During the meeting, the G20 Green Finance Study Group (GFSG) and Climate Finance Study Group (CFSG) presented their reports. In their final communiqué, the Ministers and Governors recognize the need to scale up green financing and express interest in promoting voluntary principles for green finance.

Petersberg Climate Dialogue VII Builds Momentum toward Paris Agreement Implementation [viewed]

germany_morocco5 July 2016: During the seventh Petersberg Climate Dialogue, themed 'Making the Paris Agreement a Reality,' the 35 countries in attendance focused on swift implementation of the Paris Agreement. The German hosts announced a global partnership to support the implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and indicated their intent to conclude the steps in the German ratification process before the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 22) in November 2016.

G20, IEA, IRENA Examine Progress Toward Clean Energy Supply [viewed]

Policy Update #34: Monthly Forecast: July 2016 [viewed]

In July 2016, the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will hold its first meeting since governments adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All eyes will be on its discussions regarding follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the presentations of the first governments to volunteer for national reviews of their progress in implementing the SDGs.

Canada, US, Mexico Forge North American Climate, Clean Energy and Environment Partnership [viewed]

canada_mexico_unitedsates29 June 2016: The leaders of Canada, the US and Mexico have released a joint statement on a 'North American Climate, Clean Energy and Environment Partnership,' which aims to ensure a “competitive, low-carbon and sustainable” North America and includes the goal of achieving 50% clean power generation by 2025. During the North American Leaders' Summit, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US President Barack Obama and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto agreed to align climate and energy policies in order to protect human health and help "level the playing field for our businesses, households, and workers."
