3 November 2011: EcoAgriculture Partners is carrying out the programming and planning for the international initiative on "Landscapes for People, Food and Nature" together with a group of eight co-organizers partners. This three-year collaborative initiative aims to scale up successful strategies that improve livelihoods and food security, conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services, and help address climate change.
26 October 2011: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has released two short films on livestock insurance for Kenyan pastoralists.
1 November 2011: The ninth BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change concluded with a joint statement in which ministers agreed that the Durban Climate Change Conference should achieve a comprehensive, fair and balanced outcome to enable the full, effective and sustained implementation of the Convention and its Kyoto Protocol.
28 October 2011: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released the October edition of its News Update with a selection of stories on: protected area effectiveness; Indonesia's forestry concession ban; interactions between farms and biodiversity; Forest Day 5 at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17 ) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); and the Dry Forests Symposium.
October 2011: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) has reported on the release of new wheat and maize varieties that are resistant to disease and adapted to climate change in China and Ethiopia.
This workshop aims to address critical food security and livelihood challenges in West Asia and North African (WANA) countries and has the specific objectives to: provide a better understanding and assessment of the climate change impacts on agriculture and the associated vulnerability in the WANA region; discuss and develop informed decisions on practical adaptation strategies for the agricultural sector in the WANA region; discuss and suggest the appropriate ways to promote adaptation planning and implementation and its integration into the sustainable development planning in different countries in the WANA region; and develop a Regional Adaptation Framework for continuous information exchange on climate change impacts and adaptation amongst the different countries in the WANA region. The meeting is being co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Association of Agricultural Research Institutions in the Near East and North Africa, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), and others. ICARDA is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
26 October 2011: The Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture brought together scientists from 38 countries to take stock of the current state of global knowledge on science and best practices on climate-smart agriculture, and to identify key priorities and efficient ways to implement interventions.
21 October 2011: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has reported that the first payments for the index-based livestock insurance programme piloted in Kenya's Marsabit District have been provided to 650 insured herders.
October 2011: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has released a paper exploring the adaptation benefits of sustainable land and water management (SLWM) practices at the local and landscape levels based on case studies in Kenya, Uganda, Niger and Nigeria.
21 October 2011: The 37th Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) considered updates on global and regional initiatives, held policy roundtables, and discussed global coordination and support for national processes.
