14 November 2011: The second Climate Vulnerable Forum Ministerial-level Meeting was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 14 November 2011, following a senior officers-level meeting on 13 November 2011. The meeting gathered countries that are most vulnerable to climate change with a view to speaking with one voice to press for external support in the areas of adaptation, capacity building and technology transfer.
16 November 2011: The Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change, an independent commission of scientists, has released a summary for policy makers, including a set of seven recommendations. Among the recommendations, the Commission calls for significantly raising global investments in sustainable agriculture, intensifying agricultural production on existing land base while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and reducing losses and waste in the food system.
The thirteenth meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate will convene in Crystal City, Virginia, US (just outside Washington, DC), from 17-18 November 2011. US Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs Michael Froman will serve as chair. The meeting will take place at the level of leaders' representatives. Members of the Major Economies Forum include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition, representatives will attend from Argentina, Ecuador, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, and the United Nations. The session will provide an opportunity to exchange views in preparation for the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
11 November 2011: The Asia-Pacific Forestry Week 2011 brought together around 1500 people to discuss forests and forestry in Asia and the Pacific. The event was organized under the theme "New Challenges, New Opportunities," and participants discussed governance, communication and the future of the region's forests.
10 November 2011: A new report, titled “G-20 Clean Energy, and Energy Efficiency Deployment and Policy Progress,” prepared by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in collaboration with the G20 Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency Working Group, has received the endorsement of world leaders who met from 3-4 November 2011, at the G20 meeting in Cannes, France.
October 2011: Approximately one hundred participants, scientists and policymakers from Africa, Brazil, Argentina and France, as well as representatives from international organizations, met in Niamey, Niger, from 24-25 October 2011, at the “Fight Against Desertification in Africa” conference, also known as ICID+19 Africa.
8 November 2011: The ASB Partnership for Tropical Forest Margins (ASB) has produced a policy brief titled “Co-existence of people and orangutan in Sumatra: Stabilising gradients for landscape multifunctionality,” which examines the role of forest-agroforest-agricultural landscapes in orangutan habitat in Sumatra.
4 November 2011: A new study by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a centre of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), analyzes the question of indirect land-use change (ILUC) in relation to the EU's Renewable Energy Directive. It finds that ILUC issues are a valid concern, but that the impact depends on the type of feedstock crop used as well as other factors such liberalization of international trade in biofuels.
4 November 2011: The Group of 20 (G20) Leader's Summit in Cannes concluded with the adoption of a declaration that addresses energy markets, green growth, and climate change, among other issues. Leaders called for rationalizing and phasing-out perverse fossil fuel subsidies, and reiterated their committment to a successful outcome at the upcoming 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa, at the end of the year.
3 November 2011: EcoAgriculture Partners is carrying out the programming and planning for the international initiative on "Landscapes for People, Food and Nature" together with a group of eight co-organizers partners. This three-year collaborative initiative aims to scale up successful strategies that improve livelihoods and food security, conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services, and help address climate change.
