SIDS.1sep1 September 2014: Formal proceedings for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) began with an opening plenary followed by a general debate among UN Member States. A parallel multi-stakeholder partnership dialogue took place on sustainable economic development in the afternoon, and numerous side events convened through the day and evening.

UNECA Highlights Blue Economy Potential of African SIDS [viewed]

UNECA28 August 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Climate Policy Center (ACPC) have released a report, titled ‘Climate Change in the African SIDS: The Paradox of the Small.' The report highlights that the blue economy can help African small island developing States (SIDS) to achieve their development aims and tackle challenges related to economic and climate change vulnerability. UNECA will launch the report during a side event to the Third International Conference on SIDS.

IEA Releases Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report [viewed]

IEA28 August 2014: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has launched its 'Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2014,' which finds that policy uncertainty could slow renewable energy expansion over the next five years. While the report projects renewable generation will grow by 45%, and will make up almost 26% of total global electricity generation by 2020, deployment of new renewable power capacity is expected to slow and stabilize after 2014.

Event: Integrating Migration into Development: Diaspora as a Development Enabler [viewed]

An international workshop on ‘Integrating Migration into Development: Diaspora as a Development Enabler' will focus on the interrelationships between migration and the three pillars of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental), and will include the contributions of migrants to development. The event is being co-organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The workshop will focus on the positive impacts of migrants and migration on development. It will feature some environmental panels that will discuss migration as an adaptation strategy.

Event: WOC Business Forum Workshop: 'Changing Oceans and Industry Futures' [viewed]

In conjunction with the World Ocean Council (WOC) Business Forum on Ocean Policy and Planning, WOC and the EU 'Ocean Certain' research project are organizing a workshop under the theme, 'Changing Oceans and Industry Futures: How Will Changes to Ocean Properties and Processes Affect Ocean Business?'. Fifteen ocean industry representatives will gather to give input to the research project, engage in participatory mapping of the industry, construct a future scenario and learn how the 'Ocean Certain' project will move forward with the insights gained at the workshop. The objectives of the event are both to inform industry representatives of the changes in ocean properties, processes and systems and to hear industry members' views on how these changes will affect their business.

PACC Project Completes Climate-Reslient Harbor in Cook Islands [viewed]

PACC22 August 2014: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has reported that, as part of the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change Project (PACC), the Cook Islands have completed a climate-resilient harbor for the island of Mangaia. In addition, the tool developed to design the harbor can be used to design other coastal infrastructure in the Cook Islands.

OAS, Guatemala Promote Ethanol Use [viewed]

guatemala-oas7 August 2014: The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Guatemala have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to implement a pilot project on the blending and use of ethanol, and to support the formation a Technical Unit on Biofuels. The project could result in savings of nearly US$104 million in oil imports for Guatemala.
