CGIAR Members, Partners Establish Climate Research Centers in Africa [viewed]

logos_cifor_itta11 March 2015: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have announced the establishment of the Congo Basin's first center for excellence in climate change research. A greenhouse gas (GHG) laboratory was established in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in 2014 and represents the beginning of the partners' effort to develop a network of expertise and facilities to strengthen climate change research across Africa.

EU Energy Council Meeting Signals Support for Energy Union [viewed]

Held under the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (TTE) of the Council of the EU, the meeting focused on issues including energy security, energy efficiency, decarbonization and the internal energy market.

Climate Knowledge Brokers Annual Workshop Report Released [viewed]

EU Submits INDC, Reports on State of Europe's Environment [viewed]

ec6 March 2015: The EU has submitted its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC) to the UNFCCC Secretariat, the second party to do so after Switzerland. The contribution, approved by the Environment Council, indicates that the EU intends to achieve at least a 40% domestic reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions below 1990 levels by 2030, in line with the EU 2030 Climate and Energy Framework, which was agreed by the European Council in October 2014.

SOER 2015 Highlights Challenges in Achieving European Environment Goals [viewed]

EEA2 March 2015: “The level of ambition of existing environmental policy may be inadequate to achieve Europe's long-term environmental goals,” according to ‘The European environment - state and outlook 2015 - synthesis report' (SOER 2015). The report finds that the region faces substantial challenges in protecting its natural capital, stimulating resource-efficient, low carbon economic and social development, and safeguarding its population from environmental health risks. The European Environment Agency (EEA) produces the SOER every five years.

Recipient countries include Belarus, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Honduras, India and the UK.

Event: Indicators and Data for Climate Resilient Development: From Data to Information and Knowledge to Policy Actions [viewed]

This workshop aims to identify a core set of indicators and data sets for gauging climate resilient development to enable measurement in areas such as natural hazards, vulnerability, adaptive capacity, mitigation, resilience and development. Key topics for discussion include: vulnerability to climate change, adaptive capacity and resilience; targets and indicators post 2015; development; and natural hazards related to climate change. The European Commission's (EC) Joint Research Centre Institute for Environment and Sustainability (JRC-IES) and the Climate Change Unit of the Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO C2) are organizing the workshop as part of efforts by the Global Climate Change Alliance's Flagship Initiative (GCCA+) to strengthen policy dialogue and cooperation on climate change issues.

Agriculture, Family Farming Key for Sustainable Development, FAO Director-General Tells CARICOM [viewed]

FAO27 February 2015: Agriculture and small-scale and family farming are critical drivers of inclusive economic growth and sustainable development, and key to addressing food security and coping with climate change, Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Director-General José Graziano da Silva told Heads of Government at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Summit. Da Silva also highlighted progress by CARICOM members in achieving the Millennium Development Goals' (MDG) hunger target.
