EIB, European Commission to Explore Joint Climate Finance [viewed]

14 June 2010: European Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard and European Investment Bank (EIB) President Philippe Maystadt have agreed to explore a joint climate finance initiative for developing countries, combining European Commission and member States' grants with financing from the EIB and other European financial institutions to meet adaptation and mitigation challenges.

African Union and European Commissions Dialogue on Climate Policy [viewed]

8 June 2010: The fourth College-to-College Meeting between the African Union Commission (AUC) and the European Commission (EC) was held on 8 June 2010, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss the implementation of the Africa/EU Joint Strategy and its Plan of Action and address common challenges facing the two Commissions. The meeting adopted a Joint Declaration, containing a section on dialogue on climate policy.

European Commission Encourages Certification of Biofuels [viewed]

10 June 2010: To prepare for implementation of the 2009 EU Renewable Energy Directive, the European Commission has released three documents on biofuels: a communication on voluntary schemes and default values in the EU biofuels and bioliquids sustainability scheme; a communication on the practical implementation of the EU biofuels and bioliquids sustainability scheme and on counting rules for biofuels; and a decision on guidelines for the calculation of land carbon stocks.

Event: Second Science with Africa Conference: Science, Innovation and Entrepreneurship [viewed]

This Conference is organized by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Union Commission (AUC), and aims to explore policies, measures and mechanisms for promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in areas such as agriculture, ICTs, health, infrastructure, intellectual property and technology transfer, green science and climate change. A number of initiatives will be launched during the Conference, including the African Technology Development and Transfer Network, African Science to Business Challenge, the African Science Technology and Innovation Fund and African Science Technology and Innovation Framework. In addition, the Conference features a number of fora and workshops, such as the Innovation Investment Forum, Women and Innovation Roundtable, Science Innovation and Communication Workshop, Patent Fair and the Water Quality Report.
